Solenoid

I was told a while back that there are some other solenoids that will replace the stock cub solenoids. Does anyone know what other solenoids will work? Old Ford, VW? :bigthink:

ELECTRICALLY, any variation of a starter relay will work in a garden tractor application.

MECHANICALLY, most will fit. I just installed an "old Ford" relay in a 104 and it fit perfectly on the dash tower studs.

The question becomes if the current WIRING to the relay will easily fit on the new relay studs and if the wiring will be long enough to reach to posts on the new relay. In my case, I was redoing the wiring anyway, so changing the relay style was not an issue.

I'm going to be rewiring as well, I just need an economical replacement vs the over priced Ih model.

Yes the Cub ones are WAY out there. Couple good options. Parts stores sell one for $14 or so that fits pretty good. Its actually the same as the x82 series. Also TSC has a Briggs one that fits in there with no real modifying (I don't remember expanding any wires when installing them). It's roughly $20 if I remember right.

The WF and 82 series solenoid can be replaced directly by the solenoid from an early '90s Ford Explorer (I think). It is identical except for one additional terminal that is not used.

Yes and even farther back into the 60's
Seems like the last one I got from Napa was about $12 and I did find one with only 1 small terminal, remembering it was a spade terminal and not a stud/nut.
