AG or TURF tires on the 1450
 

Since I am new around here I need some help in deciding what type of tires to purchase for my 1450 (23x8.5x12). It has no back tires on it presently and I am torn between buying AG or Turf tires. ( I just bought ribbed ones for the front)
I mostly plan to use it for mold board plowing and tilling as I have another dedicated 25hp mower for the lawn but would want to run the 44A once in a awhile so the bearings don't set up.

Do the AG tires tear up the lawn much? Are they good for plowing snow in the winter or would I be better off with Turf and chains generally?

Lets hear your suggestions.

Ive always had the best with ags. turfs have always torn up the lawn worse, especally when wet out, and dont offer anywhere close to the same amount of traction. Ags are generally a little more expensive but worth the cost as they will put the power where it belongs since you will mostly be using this tractor to pull a plow. Other than when the yard is soaked through with rain will my ags make any tracks and i have to try realy hard to do so, otherwise they float over the grass and leave less of an imprint than turfs. Since i live in an area where snow never happens i dont have first hand experience with snow traction but that ill leave to the experts. Hope this helps!

The ags would be my choice. Besides looking like a garden tractor, they will work great in the soil for tilling and plowing, as well as in the snow. Some people say that the turfs with chains work better in the snow and I have mixed views on that. I have never been stuck in the snow with my Tru Power ags, but I have with chains on my 149....well, actually it was mostly ice and not snow so it really isn't a fair comparison. I think ags for the most part will be best for what you want to do.

The Greene tractor fans talk a lot about HDAP's. I would bet they are the best combination of traction and turf protection.

They may not be suitable for a Cub Cuadet that gauges the mower deck off the tires!!:bigthink:

The HDAP tires are a lower strength sidewall tire like an ATV tire.

BUT, they are the cat's meow to the Deere owners.

they work better than turf savers in gardening and snow removal.
Normally the ag tires don't tear up the turf coarse it depends a lot on the opperator
My personal opinion is turf tires are junk. chains on turf tires, that's a joke, except on ice.
It's like winter tires vs all weather tires. You can figure that one out, it you have used both.:biggrin2:

In my experience turfs will spin and tear the grass off. Ags will dig in and leave marks but the grass is still there. I think the key either way is adding weight either by filling the tires or wheel weights. As far as plowing my dad had turfs on his diesel and I have ags. He barely could plow at all and eventually gave up because the turfs became full of dirt. I finished plowing were he couldn't and I never had a tire spin. Needless to say everything we own now has ags

Before I had ags on my plow tractors, I used turfs and chains at several plow days. I was doing better than quite a few tractors with ags. They are certainly not a joke...

This discussion interests me. Most of my tractors have either a turf or auto style tread. I recently ordered ag tires for my super duper but did not want to pay the shipping cost so they will be delivered at an antique tractor show in early Sept. I do get pretty fair traction with the turf tire and in the winter with the addition of chains but am anxious to see how those Firestone ag tires will work. I'll let you all know when I get them mounted.

I prefer ags as with our soil turfs and chains don't work to well with our red clay.:bash2: Besides that I like the tractor look.:biggrin2:

i had turfs with chains for throwin snow and as long as you have weight in the back they work just fine. i agree...they arent a joke at all. they have there purpose and can be made to work in most situations. i did go with the ags cause of the looks and in the mud i do get better traction.
