Inherited Tractor: want to know more
 

I've recently inherited an International Harvester Cub Cadet from my grandfather. Other than it appearing to be in very good condition (yellow paint is not peeling or chipped, etc.) and starting right up first time I know nothing about it.

Looking at the engine cover there is a plate with the following information on it:
Serial #: 587324
Spec #: 28542F

Embossed onto the metal near the rear right axel are large raised numbers: 31530-RT

It also has a lawn mower deck attached to it, and what appears to be a plow/snow plow attachment is separate but attachable.

I have a few questions, but any information about what it is that I've got would be great.

1. How old is it?
2. What is the model, make or whatever?
3. Where might I find a manual for it?
4. Should I eventually need new parts (like a battery) where could I get them?

First of all, :Welcome2: We like pictures here and would like to see some pictures of your new tractor. Having said this, in order to answer your questions, we need to know a little more about your tractor. First off, you can identify it by seeing what it looks like. This link http://www.xtrememotorworks.com/Cub_cadet_History.htm will show you examples of what each model looked like. Pay particular attention to the frame around the engine oil pan area, whether it's a hydro or gearshift, whether it has hydraulic lift or manual, and whether it has side panels or not. These will be key factors in determining what model it is just by looking.

If you can identify which tractor you have from that, great! If not, this link http://cubfaq.com/serialnumbers.html will show some locations that you can check the tractor for the tractor's serial and model numbers. Sounds like you've got a nice tractor, and since you got it for free, you're already ahead!

:Welcome2:.....I'll bet it's an Original Cub Cadet!!! A battery can be obtained from many different stores--just get a garden tractor battery, I recommend 300 CCA if you plan on using it in the winter to move snow.

You've come to the right place.

If it is a Cub original model, look at the side of the reduction gear housing that is in front of the transmission and behind the frame. You'll see some roughly stamped serial numbers vertically arranged (they're about 1/8" high each). That's the serial number.

The large numbers are casting or part numbers.

Regardless of what you have, the IH Cub Cadets are the best ones to have IMO.

Your tractor was built in May of 76 but we will need pictures to tell you what model it is.
