Can't get motor to run right.

 Well I got my K241 (10HP) kohler in my 71 with everything hooked up and got it started, but I am unable to get the carburator adjusted right. I took it all apart soaked it in carb cleaner, blew everything out with air put it back on and still no luck. The motor runs but it backfires a lot and "skips" but still runs fine.:bash: The muffler that I got with it is all rotted out so it is bacically straight through. Is is possible that the empy muffler is the reason for my troubles, and if so I really don't want to spen the money on a new one, so would a small stack backfire also or could I just readjust the carb to the stack and it run smooth?

cub 71 you might want to check the timing too.

I checked my timing because I had to get it timed before it would even start thats why I'm stumped on whats wrong

The muffler shouldn't cause that kind of issue. Have you replaced the points and condenser?

the points, coil, and condenser are off of my 7HP kohler and that one ran fine.:bigthink:

I got a K321 running and it ran like you described.

The condenser wire was disconnected.

It had a pretty blue spark without the condenser.

1) Carb-- Did you feel for air coming out all the passages? I use a carb cleaner to spray and look for liquid coming out each passage.

post 2 has the correct carb settings for the needles

2) points-- verify .020 gap or better yet, use a timing light to set them. Also make sure they are CLEAN

Double check wiring and connections.

Guesse what!? the condensor had a bad ground. cleaned the metal bar and it cleared right out. However I do want to get a tune up kit for my motor to really make her purrr like a kitten.:biggrin2:

Just a thought. Make sure the condenser is on the negitve post. It will run on the positive but with symptoms as you discribed.
