How often do you adjust valves
Never ... every year?
What works for most? My engine seems to run fine- so I've only done air filter and regular oil changes. I wanted to replace points and put the electronic ignition thing from Kirk on it at the same time. Maybe I can wait a few more years and just worry about valve adjustment when I freshen up the motor. I am not a perfectionist, and so, I have never seen a need to adjust the valves on any small engine I have owned.
I have had some form of Cub Cadet since 1981, I still own the engine out of the first one I ever bought. My 1974 Toyota Corolla owners manual said I had to adjust the valves. I drove it 3 times the number of miles that valve adjustment was recommended without removing the valve cover, that car would get 47 miles to the gallon when I traded it in. I think part of the reason valve adjustment is recommended is to check that nothing unusual has happened. |
manual says 500 hrs. i checked mine after god knows how many hours. and they were off a little. runs better now. but if your valves are carboned up and not seating properly i would think that would throw them off a little. cleaning off the head and combustion chamber is also 500 hrs. best to crack her open and do that along with lapping the valves and then setting the tappet gap. make sure to use a new head gasket.
