582 problems

a buddy of mine has a 582 when he got it didnt have any fuel coming through the carb so i rebuilt it for him, got it running and it was running great, now its not even usable, has a real low idle after running for a bit, floods itself out and is spitting fuel out the carb, bogs down even at WOT even when i grab the throttle itself and crack it open it wont come out of it, tried adjusting the screws on the carb it gets better and then just starts messing up again. pretty sure its a carb problem is there a chance that its just plain wore out?

There is a chance the float has a hole!!?? :bigthink:

When you say it's spitting fuel out of the carb, is that only while running? Does gas come out when it isn't running? If so, the timing is advanced too far.

If the float had a hole in it, gas would be pouring out of the atmospheric vent any time the tank shutoff was turned on.

its only while its running. puffing back out the carb, hardly any power at all slow revving when you throw the throttle up and floods out really easy, we are pulling it apart sometime this week gonna pull heads and check valves also, ill make it a point to check the timing on it as well thanks

The 582 with the 16 hp briggs is a breakerless system. The thing you can check is if both cylinders are firing. When the motor is cold, start it and let it run a few minutes, shut it down and check to see if both plugs are hot to the touch. You say you rebuilt the carb, but most times you do the fuel pump and the carb together. The settings on the carb should be 1 1/2 turns on the high and low needles.Has this motor been rebuilt?

Oops, I didn't see the part about it being a 582 the first time.
