16 HP Vanguard-1641

Re-ringing a Briggs 16 HP Vanguard twin out of a CC 1641. Got the new rings and gasket set. Got the rings on the pistons, and noticed there is some space allowing the rings to be moved up and down, (not completely filling the space). Is this ok? And does anyone know of a link where I could go to see pictures of the rings installed correctly?

Another question I had was on getting the old seals off. The main crankcase seal is pretty well attached, and not at all brittle. Tried peeling it off with a knife, not wanting to break away from the block. Is there any other methods anyone has used at getting seals off? :bigthink:

Thanks in advance! :beerchug:

The side clearange of the rings between them and the ring lands in the pistons are just a few thousands @ most, your manual will give you a spec checked by a feeler gauge.

Hmm...Hope the dealer didn't order me the wrong ring set! :crap:

Now I'm talking about clearance top to bottom of piston---up/down. in other words, the width of the groove they are in
not the diameter of rings vs diameter of groove in piston for them, which is called back clearance

Yes, I understand what you are saying. :beerchug:

There is a spec for that clearance. Yo need some movement in that space. The will expand and rotate when hot and running.

Hastings has a lot of good info here:
It will answer a lot of questions but make no mistake, you need a manual for any engine you are workinng on.
Good reading for anyone as it covers a lot!

The side clearance on the piston rings in the Vanguard engine are as follows
1st and 2nd ring are .0018-.003. The oil ring is .0045-.006. The ring end gap is .008-.018 on all 3 rings. This info was taken out of my B&S Vanguard service manual. Any other info you need just give me a yell.
