MORE 1650 problems GRR...

Hey guys, I barely have time to post this, so bear with my mistakes. I put a different engine in my 1650. The govorner in the other moter was shot. I put the new moter in, got it running, and tuned pretty good with the air cleaner off, but I put it back on and it hardly runs at all. Tuning tips? second, If you crank it for more than about 20 seconds, suddenly it seems like the battery dies. I felt along the choke cable and got a burn mark for the record. where could I start to hunt the short? another thing, I left it sit overnight with the fuel on, and a full tank. this morning it was down to half a tank, and it looked like it was comeing out the bottom of the breather. If it went through the carb, would it not also come out the aircleaner? the carb is just rebuilt, so I'm really ticked. any assistance on this would be helpful. thanks.

Lean the mixture a bit...the air cleaner reduces airflow, so you need to reduce the amount of fuel, appropriately. This is why you tune the carb with the air filter installed. You shouldn't crank it for 20 sec...you're probably overheating something in the starter, or somewhere else if you have a short like it appears you do. The starter might be opening up when it gets hot. You haven't given too much info about the wiring, but since you're having this issue when starting, I'd look at the starter cable in particular and everything else in between the + terminal on the battery and the starter and ignition. Grab a wiring diagram and trace out the starting/ignition circuits, making sure you don't have continuity between ground and any hot wire in there. If the choke cable is getting hot, something is probably grounding out on it. It won't necessarily come out the air filter. If it's leaning ever so slightly right, it'll go into the engine instead. Does the float leak? Is it adjusted properly? Change the oil before you do anything else.

Make sure you have a good ground cable from the motor itself to the frame of the tractor ..The quietlines often lose the ground cable during an dengine swap, or they get put in the wrong place. The ISO cradle is NOT grounded to the chassis so you have to jumper to the chassis itself or the current will flow thru whatever other ground it can go thru, including choke and throttle cables. That's why it burned ya..

ANd at the back, be sure all your battery connections are clean, shiny and tight, and the ground cable to the frame is the same on the frame end.

Thanks guys! Ill check the wiring over to see what I can find. Ill clean up the terminals on the battery, and on the ground cable, (which I do have installed btw). The tractor was leaning only a couple degrees to the right, so I guess that explains that. I'll take off the bowl and see what I can do about that. Matt, if I'm correct, factory settings on a k341 carb are: main:(top) 3 1/2. idle: (side) 1 1/2 right? This is what I started out with. maybe I have the numbers wrong. I don't have a book but I think that is what I heard somwhere. thanks for your help

Remember that every motor is gonna be a little different and those are only a suggestion. I use 1 3/4 on the idle because I don't think I've ever been able to get one to idle at 1.5 turns. Main usually winds up at about 3 1/8 or so but you've got to do it by feel/ear to get it right.

Ok. I'll try it and let you know! Thanks! :)

Great to see you posting, Tyler! Hope you get your 1650 going soon.

I would start looking around the air filter area. Since it ran without the filter.
Maybe it is shorted around the air filter.
I'd start my checking in that area.
I also had leaks in the fuel when left on, I found my problem was the sediment bowl leaked at the shut off.
I replaced the sediment bowls that fixed it

Genow ! Yes I agree with what Matt G. said.

I got a hot shot screwing around with an engine almost installed. The choke cable wasn't clamped and wound up hitting the + side of the coil.:beer2:

That's a great thing to pay attention to when reinstalling an engine, as most of these don't have plastic-coated control cables. However, this isn't a factor for him, as the coil on a QL is on the opposite side of the engine, mounted above the starter.
