K301 balance gears

I have heard balance gears can be removed with out removeing the crank.
Can someone who has done it give me some insite before I start disassembly on a good running engine.

Don't really want to disturb this engine as it has no issues other than I want rid of them gears.

Removal of grenade gears

Open the bottom of the engine. With snap ring pliers remove the snap ring on the gear closest to you and slide it off of its post along with all of the shims and spacers. You'll need a flashlight for the second gear. The gear has webbing and you want to have the webbing facing you. With a long punch just crumble the gear webbing using the punch (cold chisel) and a hammer. It doesn't need to be completely crumbled or broken up. Be careful and pay attention to any fragments. I use a magnet here and sweep the crankcase well. After the gear crumbles it can be moved around and then removed from its post as well as all of its shims and spacers. BTW, you'll need a right angle snap ring plier here to remove the ring. You have to hold your mouth just right but it will come off. Make sure the pliers fit the snap ring gripping holes well. It just makes it easier.

You should end up with one complete gear and one broken gear. You might also notice some missing needle bearings so keep an eye out for them while cleaning the engine case.

After cleaning the engine of any fragments just slap the oil pan back on (hopefully the gasket was salvaged) and you're good to go.
