Larger pulley on hub of original?
Has anyone put a larger pulley on the hub of their Original? The "O" that I purchased came with an aluminum pulley and the previous owner said that it would increase the speed of the tractor. It makes sense, but I just wasn't sure if anyone was making this pulley or, if it was something that someone devised.
My son and I installed it tonight and it sure does increase the speed! We're not planning on pulling it anytime soon, so I might just keep it in there for a little while. Our original has a 10hp, K241 in it and it needs some gaskets so, I might keep it on there until I swap out the gaskets. Wondering if it puts more stress on the front bearing/bushing? It was a little testing to figure out the engineering of the system underneath there and, with the fire ants, mosquitoes and darkness, it was an interesting endeavor. :bash2: If no one has heard of such a pulley, i can easily get a photo of it tomorrow, when it's daylight. Was this something that someone manufactured or one-off? |

Here is a picture of the hub. it makes a BIG difference in speed. I'm not sure if someone just made this up or, if it was something that someone was selling at one point. They definitely couldn't make it any bigger!
Now, first gear is more than a creeper gear and high gear can be a little too much for around the yard. Not sure if this was a Cub racer's part or what. I found myself using 3rd gear more than any other. Now, 2nd or even first is sufficient for most trips. Again, I'm not pulling a lot of stuff with it yet. When we decide to take it to a pull, I'll surely swap it out for the original part again. So, anyone else ever seen one of these? Thanks for any input. |
I wonder if it restricts the airflow for cooling with it being as big as it is?:bigthink:

Not sure if it restricts any flow at the engine but, it'll create a lot more flow over the hood! Had to tighten down my hat a few times.
My son shot a quick video of me on the Cub tonight. You can check it out here. |
Wow! No kidding! Very nice Original too!

That really gets down the road quick!(pun intended!)

Looks like a custom part to me.

That would be nice to have to roll snow off of the snow blade a little quicker. I noticed this winter that my O needed just a little more speed to roll the snow instead of just pushing it out of the way!

If this is a one-off piece, I don't see why someone couldn't start churning them out on a lathe. Even if you simply made the pulley size slightly bigger, it could change the speeds enough to make a difference. As it is now, 3rd gear is about only for a "highway gear".
I can't believe I actually thought of keeping this pulley on here and installing a creeper. That would be the best of both worlds! :bigthink: |
