I didn't want to have to ask........

I want to change the rear end oil in my cub 71 and I can see the drain plug in plane sight, but I cant find where to fill it and to check the level. Can someone show me a picture or explain where it is.

Edit: PaulS has the proper plug info, and you may want to take this opportunity to remove the rear plate to clean any sludge and gunk out if you think it may have been awhile.

If you have an operators manual go to page 22. There you will find a Lubrication chart that shows #4 as the fill plug and #5 as the drain plug. If you do not have the operators manual the drain plug is located at the very bottom of the tranny facing forward just a tad infront of the axles but at the bottom of the tranny. The plug that you can see on the back of the tranny above the drawbar is the fill plug.

To drain remove the bottom plug and the fill plug and let drain. Replace the drain plug and fill to the level of the fill plug and replace the fill plug.

And if your 71 is anything like my QL1000, it is a waste of time/money to drain the transmission without removing the axle housings.

The axle housings trap more dirt/sludge than the transmission.

If you change just the oil in the transmission with the drain plug, the new oil will be black in two hours.

That is assuming the oil is as bad as mine was.

CAD, you think that applies to an 882 as well?

I just cleaned out the main box.

I have only done gear drives, so I can not tell.

There is no drain from the axle area back to the main housing, so that BIG housing area collects dirt/sludge like a settling pool!

Hydros have the same issue, seems like a lot of work for something a filter would catch. If you want it completely clean though that is the way to go.

I completely agree that taking the rear plate off and the axle housings also will do a much more thorough cleaning job. The reason I answered the way I did was that was the question he asked.

Here's some of the slop in the axle housing.
