Recoil on a 71?
Well I got my cub finally and I'm having lots of problems. I have no spark which I wasn't surprised because the previous owner screwed the wiring all up. I have gotten a new IH key switch, safety switch, selenoid, and wiring harness. I will be putting it together tomorrow but i have one major question, why does mine have a recoil under the hood, and the starter generator is faced toward the back of the tractor. The recoil is on the front of the motor and is yellow so it looks like it belongs, has anyone seen anything like this before?:bigthink:

We need to see this!! |
They made 71 pull starts but why is the s/g backwards I have no idea. I think they had a 72 pull start also but I'm not sure when they stopped making them. Common for the coils to go bad. But does the engine spin backwards?

The last model to use pill start was the 72's. I passed on one last summer. He tried to get me to buy it for the rare factor but I don't want anything to do with pulling a string to start a cub!:biggrin2: I like turning the key and going!

What you should do is take off the pull starter and send it to me.hehe.More than likely the pull starter broke and it was converted over to e start,
Pic. would be good. Here is a pic of my 72 recoil start. http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/a...lePics1104.jpg |
Your 72 is awesome Lew!

Here are some pics that I have taken, if it was converted over to e-start than shouldn't the recoil be taken off and the S/G be put in its place, or can the tractor have both?

:biggrin2: There is no reason not to have both, I have had a couple ATV's, they have both recoil and electric. It is a great option when the battery is dead, which always occurs if the tractor sits for 3 months. |
I am going to be putting new wires all in it because all of them are horid looking.

Cub 71, nice 71 tractor! Those recoils are hard to find and on the rare side. Cub Cadet used a starter/generator that turned CCW. Most of the other garden tractors of that time used ones the turned CW. That is a homeade application of the starter/gen. The did it that way (turned it backwards) so the engine would turn over correctly. If they used a regular one for a CC, the generator would have been right on top of your right leg and the lift handle. You could also pull off the recoil and move it to the front, but you'll need a different starter/generator that turns CCW. If you do change it, KEEP the recoil. Or if you don't mind handstarting it, try to fix the recoil and remove the gen. Once again, nice 71 you have!:beerchug:
