Spiral pins at local store

Several guys on here have asked where to get the spiral roll pins for these old Cubs since most places only sell the lighter spring pins. Today, I was at the local hardware store and I came across their section of Hillman parts. They had the spiral pins up to 3/8" x 3". I bought 4, 1/4" x 2" pins for $2.39. They also had the standard tie rod ends as well as the heavier Hiem joints. The best part is, from what I saw, everything was American made.

Yep that is what our local Ace Hardware store carries.

Online you can also get them at Mcmaster.com
If your local store does not carry them.

I'd recommend buying them from the sponsors. They are actually called "Spirol" pins. That apparently was a manufacturer's name from some time in the past. They are stronger than simple rolled pins that you might be looking at at the hardware store. I wouldn't use the hardware store variety in a driveshaft or steering component, although they would work fine for something like holding the brake safety switch lever in place on the brake shaft.

Those are the exact same pins any sponsor or dealer sells at a fraction of the cost plus the fact you don't have to pay shipping or wait to receive the part. They clearly state on the package they are coiled which is the same thing as spirol. I consider him very lucky that he can get them local. Cub or sponsors want more than that for one pin. I prefer buying them from McMaster Carr in a lot of 25 and it's a done deal. And I have never had a "coiled pin" fail.

I went to my local bolt supply house and got them for .47 cents each. They are the spirol pins.

6 years ago, CC was selling them for $3 and change EACH. I've bought them from McMaster-Carr ever since and have had no problems using those.

I get mine from McMaster Carr also and have had no problems with them.

That's good info! Thanks for the correction! I'm going to look for some of those!

I think it would be interesting to have the shear strength data on the spirol pins and the roll pins so people could see what a vast difference there is between the two types.

I've no idea where one could get that kind of info, except to do the test themselves.
