982 w/Onan questions

It was running fine the other day. Then I went out there today, it fired right up, let it warm up, pushed some lite snow & it was acting up but not at first. This is how it was running ...mmmmmm stutter mmmmmm stutter mmmmmmm then it was fine shut it off & started it back up to go across the road to hit the neighbors drive way. I made it to the end of mine, cut right off, no dieing, just off. I checked spark - none. I pushed it back in the garage and pulled a plug. It wasn't fouled, smelled good, and was clean. I checked spark on plug none. I took points cover off and didn't see any spark there ether. I thought it was coil maybe but for sh**s & giggles, I took a piece of sand paper (220) lifted the contacts on points clean them off. It fired right up ????:bigthink: still has a miss every now & then but not regular. I'm thinking its time for plugs wires & coil & points. They are all original and it has 500 HRS. On it the plugs might have been changed, but I don't think so. Are the points suppose to spark real bad at the contacts. I don't think so but just want a second opinion .

Push up to the top. Come on you Onan guys help out 72 if you can. I have no history with Onans so I am of no help.

I would check the wire going to the points first. I had a issue with my 982 where the insulation had a wear spot that started grounding. I remember someone else had the same issue.

I agree with AJ. I didn't do anything to my 982 yet but when I do I think I will order the Onan stuff from here.http://www.kirkengines.com/
I like the dual super coil and points saver ignition setup.

:bigthink: Having problems with your glasses :biggrin2:

From Kirks website: The PointSaverTM keeps your Kohler or Onan engine running like it just received a fresh tune up – for the life of the engine!

Oh look one more :
Dual SuperCoil for Kohler and Onan Opposed Twins

Why pay over $120.00 for a factory replacement coil when this high quality part is available for less than half the price? The Dual SuperCoil is made especially to our specifications and is wound with a high resistance primary of 3.2 ohms (same as the Bosch Blue). This gives a higher secondary voltage than the stock coil for improved performance, yet is not detrimental to breaker point life. No external ballast resistor is required. Epoxy-potted windings yield maximum resistance to vibration. Made in U.S.A. by a major coil manufacturer.

Dual SuperCoil price each - $60.00 plus $11.00 USPS Priority Shipping

Hope this helps. :beerchug:

I would check the points to see if there is oil film on them. The dealer told me when my Onan was still alive, they had issues with them getting oil coming up though the points rod. So I would try cleaning them before spending money.
