What rear end came in the 982?
I was think about putting a Kubota 3cyl. diesel in my 982D & was wondering what rear end they used. Was it the fine spline or the cast & what would be the better of the 2 to use ? I was wondering also did they use a special engine plate or will the Onan one work ? Any body have any pics of what it looks like with the diesel under the hood please so I can see how the radiator. mounts & how it fits ? :bigthink:

To fill you in, they never built a 982D. The 982D that is posted on this website is actually a 1572 painted red with custom decals.
As far as the rear ends, they only used aluminum rear ends in the diesel supers. The only super with a cast rear end is the early 982's. As to what's better, they each have their strengths and weakness. The fine spline axles in the aluminum rears ends are stronger than the course splined in the cast ones, but the cast weighs substantially more. It's a lot of work to put the fine spline axles in a cast rear end for a super. The engine mounting plate is completely different for the Kubota. AJ |

982
Hi Bob, Putting a fine spline in a cast rear gear trans is not too bad. I've done one, getting ready to do another. Are you going to put a gear trans in that 982?:beerchug:

Well maybe I will turn my 1572 into a 982. I Like the red paint way better than the yellow and white on the 82 series. Or maybe flat black like a rat rod. LOL:bigthink:

I think it would be pretty hard to convert a gas machine to a smoker properly. You'll need to move the fuel tank and battery around, make some type of engine coupler and cradle and find a next to impossible diesel hood. All of this could be done but it would be a hodgepodge of a machine. The 982's are worth pretty good money. I say fix it up as a 982 and sell it then find ya a smoker.
