I am going to look at a 982 this weekend. The guy wants $1000. for it. It has new tires, and carb, 540 hours on the meter, 50" deck, rear PTO and does 't look too bad. Are these all IH made? I have no experience with the Onan engines and am looking for some advice. Are these Onan engines as good as the Kohlers? I also don't know what a fair price is for these tractors. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. I posted a pic of it

Thanks,
Earl

If it looks that good and he only wants a $1000 for it, I would jump all over it.

That particular 982 is IH built. Anything built after 1981 is CCC built. With the very early CCC models still using a lot of the left over CI items from IH, then Aluminum rear ends were used. The Onan's are good engines but from what others say, they can be expensive to rebuild, but, there are other motors out there that you can transplant into the 982 if needed. I hope you are able to get it. :beerchug:

That guy sent me an email asking if I wanted to buy it :bigthink:

I'd still buy it for $1000, but FYI, I can't see a 3-point hitch on the back in the picture you posted, so that means no rear PTO, either. Also, unless the tires have been changed since the pictures were taken, those are the original 30-year-old tires.

That's a nice 982! I'd definitely get it! :beerchug:

The rear PTO/3 point, if it has it, is worth about that much alone. The Onan's are very expensive to repair/rebuild when you compare them to the Kohlers and the earlier ones have weak connecting rods. I think a complete rebuild kit is about $1100 for the B48G original engine. That one looks like it doesn't have the rear PTO on the tractor. In my area that would still be a good buy looking at the condition. There is no way of knowing how many hours are on this model because it uses the maintenance minder hour meter. Good luck!:beerchug:

I just got a picture of the rearend and it does not have a PTO or 3pt. Is it still worth the 1000?

Thanks,
Earl

Here's the pic he sent me. If I had the money, i would but don't. He told me he would take $900.00. So you could probably get it for $850.00.
