Front PTO Question on a 129

My front pto on my 129 is bad. I will be needing another one and I have a couple of leads to follow up on, but I was wondering if all of the front pto's are the same for a 12 hp Kohler for the '60's and early 70's era cub cadet garden tractors and what a fair price is for one that has not been re-built. I have seen some rebuild kits available for about $50-$60 and I wanted to do some checking first with others who might have been down this road before.

Thanks!

This link shows the differences in the PTO's. With a 129 you should have a Type B or Type B with brake.

I have seen used PTO's run around $25 to $60 and rebuilt for $125.

These are easy to rebuild, just follow the instructions in the service manual. Make sure you buy a new button as these aren't included in the disc and spring kits.

The most difficult part will be removing the pto! There are 3 holes, each with 2 set screws in them. Make sure you have a high quality allen wrench and don't use a ball end or you could strip these out! I soak mine with Kroil and make sure I get all the crud out so the allen wrench is as deep as possible. Be sure you remove both set screws and the pto should come off with a little persuasion. Use a little anti-seize when you put the set screws back in.

I would recommend you replace the bearing while you have the pto off. It uses an offset grind on the external race with a locking collar and can be very difficult to remove without destroying it.

This video was made by one of our members. Is good to view before removing PTO.
