Steering wheel removing tip idea I got from DX3
2 Attachment(s)
I took two steering wheels off on a tip from DX3. Though I think I might have done it slightly different? I used an air hammer with the point tip but found a nut that would slide on it so it would put the load on the steering wheel nut. I had the steering wheel nut on but up just a tad from the shaft. I also had both the columns I did unbolted at the bottom and drag link off. So basically hammered the shaft out of the steering wheel. The deep dish wheel was hanging on the dash and the flat style wheel would hit the shifter and top of dash so I held that up by the steering wheel while I hammered the nut on the column. The flat one was rusted on the worse and I didnt use pb blaster on it and it came right off with no damage to nut or shaft. PB Blaster would probably be recommended.
Thanks for the tip DX3! :beerchug: |
great idea, glad it worked.

Nice tip Larry. I may try the impact if I do another one.

PBlaster
I used the PBlaster , knees pushing the wheel up, and hammer taps on a steel block resting on the nut (not the shaft). Worked great and after 2 days of soaking with the Pblaster off it came. I think I'd still be pulling in the remains of the steering assembly had I not gone this way.
No damage...! John |
