Clutch Problems on the OL'Girl

Hey guys!!! How's everyone doing tonight????

Well as you all know the Clutch Release Collar on the OL' Girl decided to lock up on me. I tore down the clutch and took some pics of the broken pieces that I found once I had the clutch disassembled. As of right now I still don't know what exactly happened. Like I stated in my other post, I always kept plenty of grease inside the Release Collar. But I guess it's just one of those things I guess.lol I'm getting ready to start ordering parts for the OL' Girl and should have her running within a few weeks,so we can get those plowing vids done. But anyway here are the pics. Maybe you guys can figure out what went wrong. Have a great night everyone!!!

Burnt up Clutch Release Collar. That Red color that you see is grease that was burnt off.

Thrust Washer #2 in a very bad shape. If you notice, this washer has more of a bowl shape than flat like Washer #1.

Hey Cub61,
Looks like about everything is wore out there. Hope you get it back up and running soon.

Cub61 08-08-2009 11:56 PM

Hey Diz!!! How's it going good buddy!!!

You're right. Everything is pretty much shot if not close to it. One thing that I failed to mention about all this is that I remember seeing lots of smoke rising out from the bottom of the tractor as I was mowing. And that's pretty much when the tractor stopped rolling. I figured it was the clutch disc that had gotten hot or something. But thankfully the clutch disc is in perfect condition along with the pressure plates. But I'm guessing that smoke was coming from the grease that was burning up within the Release Collar and outside of the Release Collar. Take care good buddy!!!!

Cub61,
What bad luck. Some say "go big or stay home". Well it looks like your clutch decided to go big when it went out. I feel for ya. And just after doing all that engine work.:bash2:

Hang in there.

Cub61 08-09-2009 07:41 AM

Good morning RPalmer!!! How's it going good buddy!!!

Thank you very much for your support. I really do appreciate it. You know I pretty said the same thing. "After all that engine work, now the clutch decides to fail on me". I tell you RPalmer, if it's not one thing it's another with this OL' Girl. But oh well don't worry, we'll have her running again before you know it. Cause she's got some plowing to do. But anyway, you take care good buddy and have yourself a great day. Take care.

Ah Matt:

YUP....looks like you will need some parts...:biggrin2.gif:

Well, if the drive line was original, that isn't bad for 45+ yrs of use.

When you get that drive line rebuilt, you will have a strong runner.

Hey Roland!!! How's it going good buddy!!!

Actually the only parts that I had replaced on the Drive Line, is the Clutch Disc along with it's bushing,Both Thrust Washers and the Thrust Bearing and also the Long Clutch Spring. Other than that everything is original on the drive line. Take care good buddy!!!!

Matt, some nice pics and I'm not quite sure where all the parts fit together BUT I can tell that they don't look good:crap: But on the other hand I KNOW that the Ol' Girl is in GOOD hands and you'll have her running and plowing in no time!!:beerchug:

Cub61,

Getting anywhere with the clutch? Haven't herd any updates for a while.

Cub61 08-21-2009 01:02 AM

Hey Diz!!! How's it going good buddy!!!

Sorry I haven't posted an update here lately. But I do have an update for you guys. I called up our good buddy Vince, and told him what had happened to the OL' Girl. And well thankfully he has a good complete clutch setup that he'll be shipping to me. So with that in mind, we should have OL' Girl back in service within a few days. So all we have to do, is just play the "waiting game" until the parts gets here. Don't worry guys, I haven't forgotten about the plowing vids. We will do them, just like I promised. Have a great night everyone!!!!
