Snow thrower Questions
I wondered if anyone knew when they changed from a two paddle auger to the four paddle auger, and what advantages there were or disadvantages? Also when rebuilding a snow thrower, besides new bearings and checking to make sure everything is in alignment is there any other advice anyone can offer?:bigthink: I'm just trying to get prepared for what comes every Winter around here, lots and lots of snow.

Doesn't anyone have any comments? :bigthink: I'm going through this QA36 completely. Totally stripped and sandblasted, primed, and painted with Iron Guard. I have a new chain coming, bought new bearings and carriage bolts. I plan on aligning everything as best I can, grease the heck out of it and see how it does this winter on a 102 with creeper gears. The only thing I changed is the auger. Mine was so beat up from the PO that I needed to replace it. Looks like he tried using it for throwing firewood!!! The auger I took out was a two paddle, but my replacement is a four paddle. I think I read somewhere that they were better. I'm just looking for any helpful advice before I give this a whirl. I've never used a garden tractor with a thrower before. I do have good tires and lots of weight so if I need to put the blade on I will. Anyone got any pointers or helpful hints?

Steve, the only thing that you will need to know is lots of wieght, and keep your front tires on the driveway. If you have any bank on the edge of the drive, if you drop the front end over it and lift the blower, you will have trouble backing up. That is the only problem that I have ever had with a blower on a tractor. As far as the 2 paddle or 4 paddle, 2 paddle is all I have ever used, so not sure if the 4 paddle is any better, but it makes sense that it would be. Good luck and have fun. Post pics of your finished blower

Will do, Thanks Rod.:beerchug:

I have never used a thrower yet. I acquired a 2 paddle and a 4 paddle so next year I could tell you my opinion on each design. (watch - we won't get any snow this year. )

The 4 paddle will theoretically evacuate the snow from the auger twice as fast, so you should be able to feed it a bit harder.

Thanks guys, I will post pictures when I get it all back together. This has been a project in itself, lots of stuff to disassemble and paint. I'm sure we will get dumped on by old man Winter, we always do at least a few times. This year won't be any different except I will be prepared. :beerchug:

Spoke to the neighbor guy who was a kid during the blizzard of '78, he told me his neighbor guy had a bobcat and a 2-auger high snowthrower that'd throw the snow OVER his garage. And 2011 was largely hyped by the local media in them comparing it to the one of 78. |
I was in high school in "78 and my Mom made me shovel us out. I remember it well, took 10 minutes to just get the front door open enough to get out!:biggrin2:
