Model 149 Hydro Question

Just changed out the fluids and filter on the hydro unit in my Model 149 and since have had issues with the drive. after about an hours use I started noticing the drive was sluggish in reverse then noticed it was sluggish to the point it would only travel at about half speed (under 4 mph) in drive. I used hytran ultra fluid and the correct filter, cleaned all the gunk from the bottom of the differential. Jacked up the front end about 9" and let the unit drain for about 4 hours to make sure everything came out.

Drive shaft and pin are fine.

Air in the system?? If so how do I purge it?

More than likely your filter has stopped up with the gunk that was loosened and you didn't see it to get it out. I did the same thing and stopped up my new filter on a 107. replaced the filter again and have had no trouble. if you fill the filter before you put it on you shouldn't have any problems.

I've had that happen, too...try another filter.

Make sure you didn't leave a piece of cleaning material in the rear end, it has happend more than once.

Thanks for the quick response. Swapped out the filter and took it around the block. So far so good. Thanks again

Don't be surprised if this filter doesn't last as long as it should. The more you run if after scraping it the more will dissolve in the fluid and be filtered out again.

I've read about guys cleaning out diffs with various solvents like brake cleaner and such. I haven't considered it because a) I didn't think it necessary - there was just a little gunk in the bottom that I was able to easily wipe away and b) I'm not sure about lingering solvents getting in with the new Hy-Tran.

What do you guys think?

I don't use any cleaners unless I'm going to wash it out completely and then I use Dawn Dish soap. It will remove all kinds of gunk. and doesn't leave a film.
But I only do that if the hy-tran is trashed.

Often times there is a lot more gunk than you had, and it's really slimy and nasty and doesn't wipe out well. Brake cleaner doesn't really leave a residue, and neither does mineral spirits. I use both of those for cleaning a lot of different things.

So what's the trick of removing the gunk and not fouling filters. I wiped the stuff out using only paper towels and rags. No solvents used, didn't want to risk contaminating the fluid
