1450 engine rebuild time

Hi,

My 1450 seems to smoke under load and also consumes quite a bit oil when running at full RPM and high load. So it is time to rebuild engine. So where can I get good quality rebuild parts? I need piston, rod, valve guides, valves etc. Also does the camshaft wear in these engines or does it last "forever"?

I am considering a kit with:

Oversize piston
undersize rod
rings
seals & gaskets
valve guides
valves
wrist pin
crank bearings
points plunger

Do I need something else? Or should this be enough? Are ie. Governor gears good to replace whie engine is unassembled? Do I need 2 of them or is one assembly enough?

Make sure you get a Kohler head gasket as most kits that are stens won't have the good head gasket. Have the machine shop check your valve guides. If they are wore you will need two new valve guides installed. There is only one governor gear, and it needs to be replaced along with a new governor cross shaft and cross shaft bushing. Don't forget new crank bearings and new crank seals. I replaced all of my old head bolts with new grade 8 bolts and washers. Buy a tube of assembly lube and a tube of anti-seize. If you are really into replacing everything, then two new valve springs with new keepers and two valve lifters could also be purchased. Once you read thru the Kohler service manual on rebuilding the engine, you will get a good idea of what should be checked and or replaced. I just rebuilt my k301 and it is really not that hard to do. It was enjoyable and I am looking forward to doing another one soon sometime.

As long as the crank bearings feel smooth when you turn them and don't have play, you can probably reuse them.

Hi,

Where can I find governor cross shaft and bushing? Does not seem to be listed at Ebuy.

The dude that sells the rebuild kits says he has the governor assembly (assume that means all the parts) for $25, but when you look in his store I can't find it. He probably has it if you contact him.

Actually he lists "governor gear assembly" for 25$ not "governor assembly". And I asked him about shaft here is reply:

"Sorry, do not have"

I know our Sponsor Chris at Cub Classics has them and the bushing. Send him an email and see if he can help you out. His add is at the top of our page.

Yes Chris has these thank you.
