Clutch plate refacing....
Since I did not replace my clutch on my 100 when I restored it. I have found out the hard way that it (the clutch) needs to be replaced. Not just some parts that could get you by, but all. And do what most people tell you, and dont take short cuts. IE pic below
http://justsomepics.smugmug.com/Hobb...15_d5K6N-L.jpg I have a buddy that has a mini metal leath that will turn up to 3/4" OD pieces, problem is that the plates have an OD of 1"...I think. So, I have an idea to spin the faces and still use his shop. Can I take a bolt that is long enough and tight enough in the ID of the plate and bolt it tight to it. Would this work, or will it give way as the face is trued up? Thoughts? |
The shaft size is 5/8" so a bolt of that size will work allright. Make sure to use a washer on each side of the plate.

I have a friend in NC that will true them for you. He has done a few sets for me, JAM UP as they like to say around here!
Let me know threw a PM if I can help you with the resurfacing of them. |
Don't use a bolt...chuck up a piece of 3/4" steel or something larger than 5/8", and turn (or file) a very slight taper on the shaft such that you can press the pressure plate onto the shaft, center drill the end so it can be supported with the tailstock, and then press the plate on and turn it. This will ensure that the pressure plate surface is reasonably close to perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the clutch. Use a bolt and questionable quality/accuracy may ensue.
