Mufflers

Since getting my 169 i have found out that the original muffler is no longer available. The privious owner has installed a quietline muffler, and other than cutting a hole in a perfectly good grill for the outlet did a nice job. My only problem is i don't like the sound. Its way to quiet and it doesnt have a nice tone like the 149. Why cant i put a muffler from a 149 on this? The only answer i have been able to get so far from reading what i could find on the web is its not big enough. It would restrict it to much.

Unless i am not taking everything into consideration here, The only thing i see just by looking is the elbow comming out of the 169 into the muffler does look bigger. The muffler part itself on the 149 is as big around as the one on my Allis-Chalmers CA. And your are running 4 cylinders through it. I really like the way the 149 sounds with its muffler. Thats why i am wondering about putting one like it on the 169. Any ideas or suggestions appriciated

This elbow does look bigger where it threads into the block.

Other than being longer the muffler part on the CA is same as 149

Diz Jr,

I had the 129/149 style muffler installed on a K341. Threaded pipe into the exhaust port and where it would bolt to the heat shield was bolted to the frame. The engine showed no signs of choking on it's exhaust.

I personally did not like the set up because the tractor was being made into my snow remover and I just knew I'd wind up plugging the pipe with snow. I have since changed the engine back to a K241. Sometimes I still think about giving it a stack. But after seeing a cracked exhaust port I drop the idea.

Did you look here for a Muffler....... Muffler

That lists:
IH - CUB CADET Muffler PN/ IH-393840-R91 which is what he wants to use. And

IH CUB CADET Quiet Line Muffler PN/751-3029 USE 951-3029 which is what he has and wants to replace with the above.

I don't see a problem with the 149 muffler. The K341 isn't THAT much bigger, and you have to remember that other applications of the K341 used those little pepperpot mufflers that are a lot more restrictive.

MattG,
Thats what i was thinking, i have seen those pepperpot mufflers on a lot of bigger engines and they seemed to run alright. So i figured the 149 muffler wouldnt be a problem.

RPalmer, Thanks for your info.

RBedell, Yes i have checked with them, They had a new old stock 169 muffler that they had just sold a week before i checked with them. :bash2: They wanted a premium price for it, but it would have been cool to have it.

Well i got this problem solved :biggrin2.gif:
Won a 169 muffler on E-bay Rusty but looks solid. Got a new grill at the same time. Installed them today. I really like the muffler. Lot nicer tone in the way it sounds. Plus comming out the side instead of the front you can hear it better. Now since i know i like it i need to remove it again and paint it or have it coated with somthing to try and preserve it as long as possible.

I just got done mowing the neighbors yard and i am really pleased with it.

I don't actually know just how hot the muffler gets. But I have used Hi-Temp engine paint on MC cylinders with good results.

RPalmer, Thanks for the tip i will look into that

One of my friends here in town was saying i should have it ceramic coated. Don't know if i want to go to that expence. I was talking to a company that does ceramic and they said that it holds up really well on headers.

Thanks ACecil :biggrin2.gif:
