129 wont start

hi again folks. was mowing my yard 2 weeks ago when my 129 started to bog and suddenly quit. found out it had NO fuel filter on it so put one on and cleaned the carb it now rolls over and squeels like a little piggy every so often .gas flows freely from the carb but nothing in top of motor and ideas as to what may have happened??
oil is full and compression is 88 lbs got good spark so dont know please help !! Murphdogg59

What do you mean 'nothing in top of motor'...I assume you mean gas? Crank it over with the choke on for a few seconds and remove the spark plug...if it isn't soaked in gas, you have a carb problem. Time to disassemble, soak, and rebuild the carb if that's the case.

never mind motors toast!!

redid carb ran for maybe 30 seconds squeeled and shut down . im thinking maybe bottom oil return plugged. even with fully charged battery and no spark plug she wont go

Bottom oil return? Huh? Maybe you ran it out of oil... There is no pressure lubrication system, it's all splash lubricated. Does it turn over or is it ceased?

the squealing doesn't seem like it's a fuel problem... I'd say it's time to pick up a craigslist mower for the time being and tear down the CC and check the bearings and such. Being able to repair a worn part vs having a trashed part is a lot of $$$.

Once the CC is back in service, sell the craigslist mower for what ya paid for it. generic MTD LTs are cheap on there.

Check the Resources>Technical Library section of this site. You should be able to find your service manual for the engine.

Have you checked your S/G? Perhaps the belt tension isn't adjusted correctly or maybe it needs to be rebuilt.....

My 73 did the same thing ...and squeeled like a little piggy, too...and I replaced the S/G---problem solved. After taking apart the S/G and analyzing it, it was obvious that was the problem. Worth a check!

Have you tried turning it over by hand? I know you say it won't stay running and makes funny noises, won't turn over with the starter, but have you moved the engine by hand to get a good feel for how the internals are moving?
