New guy from Saskatchewan

Hi I just bought a 1983 982 that has a 3pt hitch, PTO, steering brakes, and a 60 inch deck. The PO said that he ran it low on oil and it only ran on 1 cyl and was knocking when he parked it. I hope it repairable without a re-power. Once it is fixed I would like to get a tiller so my question is which tiller?

Sweet 982!

Ran low on oil and now knocks and runs on 1 cylinder? I bet it threw a rod. Onan parts are exorbitantly expensive; you can likely repower it for less than you can rebuild the Onan, and you'll have a better engine, too. There are many different engines that'll fit with minimal modifications. A Kohler M18 or M20 would be the easiest.

Hey a fellow Canadian!!! I'm in Alberta, pretty much on the Sask border along the number 7. The only tiller that will easily work for your 982 is a 3pth mounted one. I have only seen one and they are extremely hard to find and rediculously expensive. If your really good with fabrication, i beleive Matt G. Built an adapter that will make all the series 1 and 2 tillers work on a super. They are a little easier to find.

Where in Sask are you from? I have lots of tillers if you want one, and I also host a plowday that you just might be interested in coming to.

Take care!

I am in southeast sk about 20 miles from Melville. I need to get this engine fixed first and then get a tiller but I do some trucking when I am not farming that takes me into Alberta so I may have to stop in to see what you have. When is your plow day?

Melville? Wow that's a ways away. I'm thinking of having my PD In early august or late July. Before harvest anyway.

Matt, will a flat pan kohler, say a k341s fit in a 982? Flatpan kohlers are pretty plentiful up here, maybe one would fit?

I'm gonna go with probably not. Considering the amount of Kohler Magnum, Command, and Briggs Vanguard engines that are used in the newer Cub Cadets and other things, there's gotta be something around. Most any modern V-twin will fit in there as long as the PTO clutch can be positioned to line up and a driveshaft adapter made.

I'm intrigued by what kind of structure you have it parked in (?) :)
