782 ignition switch
Lights on my 782 won't work, the lead for lights wont light up my test light and sometimes the hour meter keeps running.I found a switch off a poulan pro it has 7 instead of 5 pins.It has 2 positions between off and start. So it should work.I also cut the plug off the donar tractor what is the safest way to find out which pins go to what,I dont want to fry the wires should I hook up the hot and go from there with a test light,or where might I find a wiring diagram for the donar. Also the patent number is same as original and under it it has an"A" like the 782 ,Thanks for any help in advance

That switch probably won't work, as most switches now are for machines with a magneto ignition and not battery ignition like the 782 has. The patent number matching doesn't mean anything other than some of the technology used in both switches is the same. It does not mean the switches are the same or interchangeable.
The correct switch is 925-3021 and is available from a CC dealer, the sponsors, and probably many other places for $25. It's not worth trying to kludge something else on there when the parts are readily available and reasonably priced. |
In order to get aftermarket or other brand of ignition switches to work, it is imperative that you have a internal schematic or wiring diagram for the device. In absence of that, then it it imperative that you have the correct CC parts.

To add to all that has been said, there are 2 wiring diagrams, for a 782 an early and a late.

I havent been able to find a diagram for the tractor I got the switch from.I have both 782 wiring diagrams. As far as lights go I am not so sure the switch is the problem. As far the switch being inexspensive in this economy 25 bucks is a lot of money.
