Rear Axle Question 127
 

Hello all!

I have my 127 partly dissembled after painting and noticed the hub on the rear axle is out of round. It binds on the brakes in certain places as it turns and looks to wobble. It is quite secure with little or no movement and I have not had any leaking in the area.

What do I need to do here? Should I scout an axle? How do you go about removing it?

What I found in the Service Manual
 

OK, so I found in the service manual how to remove the axles, seals, etc but it requires splitting the tractor. Is this necessary just to switch out an axle? Are the c-clips visible from the rear cover of the hydro?

If I do have to split the tractor, are there any pitfalls to avoid or suggestions to make it go more smoothly?

I have not had the pleasure (or sorrow) of removing a rear axle, but as far as I know, you should be able to drop the rear cover off the diff and gain access to the c clips and yank the axle out without splitting the tractor. I am still a little confused on what your exact issue is with the offending axle, it sounds as if it is bent at the hub causing it to wobble, if that is the case, I am guessing you will need a replacement axle, I doubt the bent one could be straightened out.

Any 1x6/7 axle should work, more than likely any axle with external brakes from a cast iron rear cub will work as a replacement, but that is just speculation on my part. Check the for sale section of this site or one of the site sponsors for parts. While you got it out, you might as well change the axle seal.

You don't have to split the tractor to pull an axle or c-clip, its all possible through the rear cover.

Sounds like it may have been dropped at some point and bent the end of the axle/hub to be out of round. Any coarse splined axle with external brakes should be a direct replacement. Check out the sponsors above, or place a wanted ad for a replacement.

Hi all!

Matt sent me a PM the other day and you guys are backing him up big time! :biggrin2:

I have already ordered another axle from Rich at Patton Acres and new seals/bearings from the dealer.

Interesting thought about the drop. I could not imagine another way to bend an axle like that.

I'll post progress after parts arrive. Mostly I am looking forward to posting when restoration is complete!
