B & S 14HP & 16HP Vanguard V-Twin Questions

1 Attachment(s)
I read somewhere that the 14HP & 16HP Vanguard V-Twins were identical power plants with the exception of the carburetor. (had to read 3 times due to disbelief) If that is true, what part of the carburetor is different and are they interchangeable? If so, why would Briggs market essentially the same engine with different ratings? Why not just offer the 16HP and call it a day?

Also, why do folks in all the various tractor forums seem to prefer Kohler's over Briggs? I have never had any trouble with Briggs engines (4) in any power equipment over the last 30 years and Tecumseh's (2) as well. You read about certain years of problems with Kohler's and engines having to be replaced yet they are still seen as a premium product to Briggs. What is it about Kohler's that makes them so much more desirable? And why are Briggs considered a lower 3rd tier after #1. Onan and #2. Kohler?

Well that was an interesting question. I just checked the Cub parts web site looking for what is different between the engine in the 1440 and the 1641, block, heads, crank shaft, cam, pistons, flywheel, carb, timing gear and intake manifold are the same. So my guess is that the 14 & 16 are the same engine and this is another case of marketing like the M15 in the 1541 that is really an M18. That said is the 1440 really a 1640?
The V-Twin Vanguard in my opinion is possibly the best air cooled gas engine on the market today. The Vanguard is not built by B&S it is actually built by Daihatsu Briggs & Stratton (DBS).

I like the Vanguard enough that I repowered my 1210 that had a Kohler M12 in it with a 16HP Vanguard. :beerchug:

The B&S Vanguard is a great engine. I have one in my 1641 and it runs like a champ. By far the best engine B&S ever put a badge on. Has as much power as the CH18 in my 682.

Vanguards are excellent power plants - all H.P. are different Bore Size.

Explain why the 14 in the 1440 and the 16 in the 1641 have the same block part # and the same piston part # per the Cub web site? :bigthink:

B&S Vanguard

I'm with ya'll on liking the B&S engines.Ive got a 95 1440 that I would'nt trade anything for it.I like the Kohlers okay but I was raised on Briggs engines and I'm just partial toward them.I think it is probably what your dad bought and put his faith in,my dad drove nothing but a Chevy P/U truck and my mother nothing but a Buick car.And of course my dad bought nothing but mowers with briggs engines in them and thats what I worked on as a young man.So in closing I drive a Chevy Avalanche and my Wife drives a Suburban and you see why I would'nt trade my 95 1440 for anything.

I am not disagreeing with what you said; all I’m saying is that according to the “Cub Cadet” parts website all of the parts that I previously mentioned are the same. That said either the Cub site is wrong or Cub has one of the engines mismarked. I know on some of the Kohler CH18’s and CH22’s used in Cubs the difference is the carb. :bigthink:

Just did a little more digging on the Cub parts site. The complete engine number for the 1641 is BS-303447-1147, the number for the 1440 is BS-294447-1145. The replacement short block for both is the same, part # BS-494054. According to the info you provided, both the 294000 and the 303000 series engines have the same bore size.

Something is different between the two according to the complete engine part numbers but I can’t find anything that would explain the HP rating difference. :bigthink:
