Onan P218
I have an onan p218 that I cannot get running right. It sat in a barn for awhile so I drained gas, put new fuel lines and fuel filter. Rebuilt Nikki carb and it still will only run on almost full choke. If I trickle gas in the carb when it is idling it will smooth out. This I would lead me to believe it is starving for gas. I read on another thread that the intake manifold is notorious for leaks. I guess I will take it back off and check it. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

If you are certain that you have all the passages clean in the carb then you probably have a vacuum leak somewhere. If you can get it to run long enough spray carb cleaner or starting fluid around where you suspect a leak. Just be careful with the flammable liquids. Usually you can find a leak quick with this method.
The manifolds often leak at the seam where they are put together.. there are several threads on here where people have drilled out the rivets, separated them and resealed. Good luck with it:beerchug: |
Float level could be too low...

Well, took off intake manifold today and checked for leaks. No leaks. Looked at carburetor again and realized I never took out slow idle jet to clean when I rebuilt the carb. Was completely plugged. Cleaned it out and put it back together and it purrs like a kitten. Thanks for all the suggestions and help.
