Known 1440 problems.

I drove past the scrap yard today and they have a 1440 sitting there, it's missing all the plastic and a few other items but has AG's and a deck on it and they only want $40 for it. I rolled the engine over by hand and it feels like it has compression but I noticed two head bolts missing on the one side. What are some of the more common issues with these engines? Other than changing oil I have no experience with a Briggs engine.

Valve covers leaking. I had a customer change oil in a 16v-twin Vanguard and forgot to put oil in and started it. He heard a noise and shut it down. He then added oil and used it for an entire season with an "annoying miss". I found it had a broken rod but had no other damage...amazing! I thoroughly cleaned the engine looking for additional damage...none. After a trip to the machine shop and another cleaning, I reassembled it and he used it for years after. My point...they are absolutely top shelf engines and I would repower a 782 series with one any day. For $40 who cares... it is worth that and more!

Looks like a money maker to me Tim. Go gits it!

Valves in these can get "sticky" and bend push rods. Also displace the steel guide in the aluminum head. Usually from over heat situatuion. With my limited skills I rehab'd one in such condition. Was surprised how well it ran afterward. Oh, check out the starter and starter gear carefully when you have the tins off. Just passing along wise advice given to me. Sounds like a steal at $40.:beerchug:

Thanks for the info. I was looking up prices for engine parts last night and it looks like the engine would be fairly cheap to work, I plan to go get it at lunch time.

The front an rear crank shaft oil seals tend to leak and the grommet for the dipstick gets brittle as a fiddle and will leak there also.
Keep us posted Tim.
