Kawasaki FD20D Cam Gear question??

I know early versions of this motor used a plastic cam shaft gear that are known to fail over time. I'm not sure if they used them in the Cubs though. I read somewhere that the plastic cam gear was a request by John Deere to reduce engine noise. Anyone know if they were in fact used in the Cubs as well? Trying to figure out if my 3205 has it or not.

First, welcome to OCC......... :Welcome2:

The 3205 rolled out of the Factory with the Kawasaki FD20D, Spec AS21 Engine in it.

IIRC the Cam Problem existed on1998 and older engines. I looked into this a year ago and seems that was the turning point for that situation.

2086

The mid '90s Cub Super 2086 used the FD620 engine. I have had two of them and the engines both failed due to the plastic cam gear.
John Deere offers a repair kit for the FD620 for this problem.
On the plus side, the Kawasaki is a great engine if it has been updated.

Yes, I have the AS21 model number. I believe it is a 98, but sounds like the only way to find out is to tear into it to find out. Bout 700 hours on the machine. Going to try and get through the winter snow blowing with it than I'll pull the water pump and see if it does or not.

There was someone that had info on a serial number where the issue was resolved on the Cubs. I will look tonight to see if I can locate it. I was looking at a 2086 and someone gave me that info.

I'm curious about this too. I have a 500hr FD620D in my parts tractor that I'm not sure if it has the plastic gears, my best guess is they are steel.

I think it's a 3208 since it has a locking cast rear axle. That should mean it's 2000 or newer.

IIRC the Kawasaki serial number break is before 150,198 it was plastic and steel after that.

The 3208 was built 2000-2001 and will have the steel gear.

I too think the FD620 is an awesome engine.:beerchug:

Thanks for your response.

I'm really tempted to build a snow removal only 3000 series tractor with it and my other parts/ roller tractor since I could then leave on the Sims cab and add a heater core to keep me toasty warm.

All of my other tractors have Kohler engines in them.
