1650 PTO question
 

I have a 1650 Hydro that has been in the family since it was new in the 70s. Just recently, the front PTO that runs the mower deck just cuts out. Now it will run the deck for 20 sec to as long as 3 - 4 minutes when the unit is just started, but then cuts out again. This has an electric switch that activates it. Sounds like an electrical problem, but it all looks ok from a visual inspection. Could the air gap adjustments on the front clutch be connected to this issue? Does anyone have any experience with this problem? Thanks.

It sounds like the air gap is you problem to me. The pto will act intermitten like that if the air gap gets to big. I believe the correct gap is .017". I might be wrong on that, but that was what it was on the x82 series I've worked on. It shouldn't be a hard fix.

The gap adjustment was only off a little, so I adjusted it and the problem persisted. Then I was able to isolate a cracked wire going to the PTO, so that was the final fix. Thanks for the advice.
