When to roll the lawn?

I've mowed 4 plus acres the past 3 years with a Scag. Last year I noticed some real bumpy spots in the yard. My guess in early spring the heavy Scag caused rutting. You can't see anything in the grass but man can I feel it.
So my question when should I roll it?

Soon as conditions permit without making more ruts from towing a heavy roller around.
Simple, Huh??

I try to roll mine a couple days before the first mowing of the year and when the ground is soft enough to be effective but not leave tire tracks or spin the tires. I have hickory trees so rolling when the ground is soft helps push the nuts into the ground instead of slinging them at the house. The squirrels probably hate me though. Lol

I roll my grass when it's still slightly moist. Can't let it get too dry or it will burn up too fast. If it's really dry, I'll use an orange Zig Zag, but if the moisture content is ideal, the new silver Zig Zag is perfect. Be sure to pick out all the seeds and twigs first, and make sure that the grass is broken up evenly before you roll it, or it might come out looking like a pregnant dolphin with a hole in the side.

I know this isn't rocket science. I've never rolled any grass! I mean lawn. Was hoping for some magic answer.

You know it's legal to roll grass in 32 states now, right?

I'm about ready to get the 1211 up from the winter nap. First thing will be to get the yard roller to work. The plow guy and his truck really make a mess of the drive way and yard next to. I'll fill the 24" x 54" roller with water and roll non stop when the ground is still spongy and a little wet so I can get it packed down good. That's when I do it. In the summer its almost useless because the ground is dry and harder.
