Internal vs external brakes

I tried using the search function but my computer doesnt like that button for some reason. I was wondering what is the advantage of using a rear with an internal brake vs external. I am getting ready to build a cub for my kids to run in the youth class and the cub i got has external brakes. Will this be a problem?

May be a little harder to adjust initially.

I did find a post asking the same question and got the answer i was looking for. But now im wondering can an external brake rear be converted to internal brake? If so is it even worth it or should i look for another rear?

Personally, I prefer External Brakes. Just easier to service and maintain.

Are you refering to just normal garden tractor use or for pulling? Or both

I've had several internal brake and external brake Cubs. None of the external brakes ever worked very well. All the internal brake tractors worked fine and never needed any attention.

The main thing I see wrong with the internal brake is, it can lock the ring/pinion but it doesn't stop the differential from working. So, in a marginal traction situation, you can lock the input shaft but due to the differential action, one wheel can rotate forward while one spins backwards and you actually have no brakes.

The Cyclops external brakes work great.

I will only be using this tractor for pulling, nothing else. I have read that its hard to get certain wheels to fit with the external brakes but other then that they dont seem any better or worse then internal brakes. I will be running the stock rims with 23x10.50 tires so i dont think i will have an issue.

For a dedicated pulling tractor it's best to use internal break transmission. The external breaks a pron to hanging up.
