582 breather blowing oil
Can anyone explain what causes this? I have a engine in my 582 Special that is blowing oil out of one of the breathers. Is it a bad breather or is it something internal in the engine? I saw where one breather is still available, but the other one isn't. It does appear that I'm blowing oil out of the one that is available. Do I need to buy the breather or is my engine junk? Thanks in advance.

If it's only blowing oil out of one breather, I'd replace that breather. If you had a bunch of blowby it would probably be coming out of both.
B&S really took some shortcuts with that breather design...no replaceable parts, just replace the whole assembly... |
I ordered a breather today. Thanks for the advise Matt.

I replaced the breather the other day and it's still blowing oil like there is no tomorrow. I assume it's a bad engine. There is a swap meet in Brookville IN tomorrow so I think the 582 Special is going, wearing a name tag with a price on it.
