RC car stuff

No I don't have one of these but thought this was cool.

This kind of stuff makes me feel older than dirt.

Calvins66Cub 01-28-2015 05:57 PM

That was cool!

I feel like I'm smart sometimes. Then I watch videos like those two, not so much.

Really cool videos guys, amazing to see the technology we have sometimes. Watch the amazon robots videos on YouTube. I've seen them in person..........wow, again, not so smart over here!

olds45512 01-28-2015 07:08 PM

thats cool. i stopped racing rc about 2 yrs ago but still have all my stuff, its a pretty expensive hobby with each car costing about $800 to make it competitive. heres an on board video from my 2wd buggy, it was very hard to drve with the go pro on top because it made it very top heavy.

Sweet vid olds!!

Terry C 01-28-2015 10:28 PM

I raced 1/10 sedan gas on road till a couple of years ago. I was too old and reflexes are not there anymore. I still love the smell of burning nitro.
Used to cut carbon fiber chassis plates for several r/c companies.

Miniature camera today are everywhere! I design a belly case for a small 35mm camera on one of my RC plane to take aerial picture in the 80. a mini servo was radio controlled to push the shooting switch. Today the perfect toy is a drone like this one with go pro camera. You can film amazing things and no need to be a expert, you just flip a switch and they land on the take off point alone.

I also have a few planes and mini quad copter with a camera, but I'm better with things that stay on the ground, lol.

Now I have to figure out which RC to attach this knock off GoPro camera I just picked up :) I actually picked it up to record some fun tractor vids but might as well get my money worth out of it!

Lanceskene 01-29-2015 03:08 PM

Thats a nasty habit those RCs, I got into them about 40 yrs ago and Im still addicted.... cars, trucks, boats, planes and heli's.... no quad-copter yet but thats about all Im missing. Have a new AE gas truck I still need to break-in the motor, and an AE gas pan racer thats about 40 yrs old... its one of those hobbies you get to share with the g-kids so even the wife cant complain too much. Lol

Ya it's a hard habit to break man! I buy all my stuff used and rebuild them all. Doing it this way they are so darn cheap that it makes it hard to pass up the deal :bash2: The only thing that has gotten me to calm down buying these is Cubs HAHAHAHAHA! :beerchug: Still not saving any cash but just able to actually sit on these RC's now  I had an early quad copter and it was really fun. My buddies day has it now and he uses it to grab video of houses he sells.

Second truck is my medium track truck that I race on dirt only.
Third truck is my big track truck that I race on dirt only.
I run stock motors in the first 2 trucks.
I run stock and mod motors in the third truck.

I notice your ae the first time I watch the video (great video).

My Son and I started with Losi and I stayed with them. All the local tracks shut down and the ones that are still active run more than stadium trucks and buggies together. Most of the none stadium trucks and buggies are much bigger. I was a punching bag at one race......last time I ran them.

Yea the track I started at closed down so I started going to the track in the video, its a real nice place but its about an hour each way so by the time I paid for gas and entry fee I had $50 into going and I just couldn't justify the cost anymore. Another reason I stopped going is lack of competition, the few people that could run with me moved away or stopped going and it just wasn't fun being 3 or 4 laps up on 2nd place, despite my best efforts to help people with there set ups so they'd be more competitive they didn't want to hear it and yes once the real racers left it turned into a hack fest.

I've been into RC off and on for 23 yrs. I recently dug mine out of hibernation and started messing with them again. I did a partial trade a few years ago of a Traxxas Nitro Rustler for a 126 Cub. My current RCs are a custom Tamiya Clodbuster that I'm building into a rock crawler, a Duratrax 1/8th nitro buggy being converted to a short course truck, and a homemade 1/10th electric funny car.

I took on the Jammin line because they are built like tanks. With them being old now I can snag parts dirt cheap and then build whatever I want from them. Here's a monster truck I built out of a nitro truggy.

I think we should sticky this thread. It's filling up faster than the cycle thread. I will have to dig out my old Blackfoot and order the trans parts I need. :bigthink: :biggrin2:

Just like my tractors..... some of my favorite RCs are my oldest, I built this dragster around the late 70s, about the same time I started working in metal fab, so the car has a hand built aluminum chassis, parts from an AE 1/8 onroad car, 21 motor, its 42"s long, does about 85-90mph.

Very cool!

Hey, remember the old Hot Shot and that line? The Grass Hopper and Frog too HAHAHA. I had the Hot Shot and I built a rocket launching backpack for it so I could shoot bottle rockets off it from my remote. Also had it completely protected with Aluminum plate that I cut on my dad's bandsaw :) Wish I had picks of that!

Also had the RC10 on my XMas list for as long as I could remember! They where the racer's Dream Machine back then!

Huh, now that we are all talking about these I forgot how many I had in my past and how much fun they are to mess around with :biggrin2:

+1 for the sticky and the Blackfoot!

Remember this baby with the trans inside so you could shift gears from your remote!!! Ah when I went to races as a kid the dad's would pull out their expensive toys and this would always make an appearance :)

If you look on page 2 you'll see my bruiser, I completely restored it last year.

Actually my cousin bought it off a guy he worked with about 15yrs ago for $50, I guess he didn't know it was worth way more, when my cousin decided to sell it I bought it and restored it.

I'm not sure how many of you have been to this site but if you are looking for RC stuff to buy/sell I get most of my items from here. Just your standard online garage sale for people to buy and sell their stuff but it's very popular so there is a ton of stuff up there. It's a pretty large RC site in general but I only go to this single thread to buy and sell stuff. Be warned, you could get hooked pretty fast! HAHAHA

Guys I made this a sticky for you. None of the Mods voiced an objection so enjoy. :beerchug:

Nice! I'll have to start digging out some goodies to post :-)

Terry C 01-31-2015 10:58 PM

Back when I started with electric the batteries were 1100mah sanyos. All the race teams had batteries the rest of us couldn't even buy even if you had the money. The kept the best batteries for their team guys. That's why I started with nitro on road.
Now the lipos they use, someone told me they don't even switch batteries on a race day, I guess you can run then charge right away even if they are hot.
Brushless motors and lipos nowadays.

i can run about 35 minute off a lipo but i always switched them between races, charging a hot lipo is a no no as it ups the chance of it catching fire. im actually planning to go racing for the first time in 2yrs next month for my birthday, hopefully it doesnt take to much practice to shake the rust off.

I'm guessing if you don't over think it and let your instincts take over, it will be like riding a bike, it will all come back you
