14hp vanguard rebuild.

I got the engine out of the scrap yard 1440 and it has a broken connecting rod. The engine got some water in the one cylinder which rusted the bore a bit, I don't really have anything at home to clean it up with but I suspect it would need bored. The crank doesn't look bad but I can't get a good look at it since it's still in the block and I don't have an impact here to get the flywheel nut off. Are these engines worth rebuilding? I've found .010 pistons new and plenty of good used parts.

I would say so. I think that is a 16hp if you take the restrictor gaskets out of the exhaust. Sam loves the Vanguards! I really like the 23 in my Super. :beerchug:

Here is an option......

Can probably find a running 1440 cheaper than the new motor.

Did you just want the motor for another project?

You will need to push the pencil on the parts to see if it is worth it for what ever end result you want.

I was hoping to use the engine to repower a different tractor. I'm gonna get the crank out one of these nights so I can get a good look at it and go from there. Pistons are about $90 each and I found a complete gasket kit, depending on the condition of the crank I could rebuild it for about $500.
