Cub Cadet 100 restor

Morn, well this is my offical post to this great place of knowledge. Last fall I stumbled upon a neglected, but stored indoors cub 100 They had just torn down a leanto shed that was pulling the garage to one side. They didnt know that her father had this.
http://justsomepics.smugmug.com/Hobb...61_Quxt6-M.jpg

I asked my friend what they were going to do with it and she told me to take it if I wanted it.
http://justsomepics.smugmug.com/Hobb...52_XWerc-M.jpg

http://justsomepics.smugmug.com/Hobb...42_cyoGE-M.jpg

My plan was to just get it running again, which it did. But then I had a lot of free time since times are tough.

rpage83 04-06-2011 11:09 AM

Since then, I have been in the garage with PB blaster, pnematic tools and dirty overalls tearing this down to managable pieces.
http://justsomepics.smugmug.com/Hobb...93_JZBf2-L.jpg

Steering column was seized and broke upon removal. But I had a new, rebuilt one coming from a website.
http://justsomepics.smugmug.com/Hobb...29_n5Yn9-M.jpg

I had a bear of a time removing the pivot pin. It came out but the pin has no grooves to hold any grease of any kind. Im planning on putting a grease zert in the under center, but also thinking of grooving the pin to allow some channels.
http://justsomepics.smugmug.com/Hobb...20_HGzu5-L.jpg

Next was the clutch assembly. Scratchen my head on this one. Im at the point of disasembly of the clutch plates. Is there a tool to compress the spring so that I dont get a smashed finger or something???
http://justsomepics.smugmug.com/Hobb...80_jXqot-L.jpg

rpage83 04-06-2011 11:15 AM

My next step was to remove all the rust and paint to do a decent job of restoring this cub. I figured with little money and time on my hand, I turned to science. I spent 32 bucks on some threaded rod, shelving angle iron and 100% lye product and am now using the electricity action for overnight relief of rust, paint, grime and dirt. Heres a link to my youtube vid.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mfu-ESOOGA

Heres a pic of my first setup, that did NOT work.
http://justsomepics.smugmug.com/Hobb...32_7wQEr-L.jpg

I have some pics to come of the foot pedels before and after. I also spent an hour at a scrap yard ,and found some new metal sheets and metal rods for the anodes for my 55 gal drum system.

Thanks for looking. I have everything torn down to the bare metal, and plan to build a paint booth and do a decent job. Not sure what to do with the engine. It runs, does not knock, and no smoke......:beer2: May just tear down a little and resurface some items.

The 100 is a nice project! Please keep us updated on your progress! :beerchug:

:Welcome2:

Great looking 100! I'm looking forward to oyur progress!

rpage83 04-06-2011 02:50 PM

Thanks guys, im also looking forward to this. I have a lot to learn as far as body work, fill and painting. Im hoping I dont screw anything up.

I have filled some of the rust pitting from it sitting under a leaky roof.
http://justsomepics.smugmug.com/Hobb...56_UqLqg-L.jpg

As well as the seat. It was in decent shape, as well as the body. Not much to do, but I still figure that a good coat of paint wont hurt.

Looking forward to more updates......They didn't happen to have more Cubs hidden under that lean to did they? :HeadScratch:

rpage83 04-06-2011 11:08 PM

Funny thing is that they have a Sears 19.9 in the back with my name on it if I want.

But there is another cub, a 106 that is not covered by my friends house.
http://justsomepics.smugmug.com/Hobb...21_BmZkJ-M.jpg

And there is a little mustang mower?
http://justsomepics.smugmug.com/Hobb...29_zQ6ai-L.jpg

Not sure what to do because im expecting a John Deere 110 round fender that is coming this may.

rpage83 04-06-2011 11:11 PM

First thing first is to have this 100 in the town parade. This will be my first restored/fixed up tractor that I have enjoyed. School will be out for three weeks, then its game on. Ive been tinkering with this since Dec.
I do have one question. Before I tore the hood off, it would encounter the steering wheel. Im assuming that there are two options, either move the hood forward or raise the steering wheel??

That's a Continental lawn mower, not a mustang mower, I think. Nice work on the 100:beerchug: Keep the pics comin!

Continental mowers are quite rare if i remember correctly. Sweet looking 100! and keep up the updates! That 106 looks good too! And it has IH wheel weights! By the way :Welcome2:

Ask them about that #2 cart. It looks nice too.

nikster 04-07-2011 05:45 AM

Great video.

Question?

It seemed to me that your process was bubbling away like crazy. When I did mine I NEVER had such a bubbling like yours? It was just slow, & not to much action? This has got me stumped?:bash2:

Had to keep my nose section in for about 3 days.

Any clue as to the difference??????

Nik,

rpage83 04-07-2011 10:31 AM

Nik,
What type of additive to the water were you using?

I have the voltage on High for the demo, but still at 6V 3 amp, it bubbles.

I tried the baking soda, and powder. I was like you, it didnt have to much action. So, look for 100% LYE product, (my wife told me to use the lye, now she eggs me on to do more tractors). I found it in drain cleaner mentioned in the vid. Also, the more anodes you have surrounding the item, the better the action/ line of site. Im still deciding if I will supersize the same setup for my 55 gal/ frame work???? May use rebar in lieu of the 3/8 rod. Although that is decent and cheap way. Plus I can move them around until I get the bubbles I want.

Let me know if you need anything else. I will take a snap of the cast irton axle thats been soaking overnight.

Here are some pics of my axle. Its been soaking for two days. I have used a wire brush to help aid in the removal of stubborn paint.

Good? I think a GREAT JOB!

I used Arm & Hammer washing soda. I'm going to look this weekend for the drain cleaner. Buy up some of that perforated angle iron & r-bar. Going to get a whole new system built for myself. Got an ole' 5 gal., plus going to keep my eyes open for something bigger.

Lets see, i'll call your system "SLICK".

Nik,

mmzullo 04-07-2011 08:42 PM

The frame is probably bent just in front of the front axle. With the engine and axle out just run a straight edge on the frame and set if it's out. It's from using the front end as a push bar or running into things. Pretty common.

rpage83 04-07-2011 08:52 PM

Good luck Nik. Im gonna start the 55 gal system next week.
Hope all goes well. Its an easy way to remove the grease, rust and paint. Again, make sure that the product is 100% lye!!! no, 25% or 75%, that will help a TON!

Nik,

Maybe I under spoke Nik. I'll agree with you and say it's going a great job!

rpage83 04-08-2011 09:23 AM

No worries. Im just glad to add to the allready extensive knowhow on this forum board. I have been browsing for a long time. There are a few websites that were ok, but this one worked and fit what I was looking for. Im actually going to try zinc plating. It was talked about and illistrated on one of the members cud page, Matts Cub page. http://mgonitzke.net16.net/

Im not sure how this is going to work for me, but im allways willing to learn and try new tricks, and technics.

Hopfully, this cub will be wrapped up by the end of April, if not middle of May. I found some decals, steering wheel cap, and some wheel weights. Id love to add a creeper gear, but they are so $$$$$. I have a old sears 3 point I think will be on this once its all done.

rpage83 04-14-2011 11:25 AM

slow, but steady

Been working on this cub, and all the small parts.
Here are the foot pads before a soak and after.

Not sure why the engine was painted red over the yellow?
http://justsomepics.smugmug.com/Hobb...80_BYYSF-L.jpg

Hope to have everything ready to paint by the 20th

ACecil 04-14-2011 12:15 PM

Nice work, thanks for the update pics! :beerchug:

Methos 04-14-2011 07:15 PM

I'd say you need a new drive shaft. Get in touch with Mark at IH Cub Cadet Parts he's a site sponser and has some great drive shafts and prices! Your doing a great job! Keep it up!

As said before the front frame might be bent. Straighten it back out, and if it still hits when you reassemble it, shim the rear of the grill casting with a washer on each side. Add some more if it needs it.

rpage83 04-19-2011 09:30 AM

Just started on the last three items before I can get the paint a flying.
I figured that I would just use a 55 gal drum, five T post and some baling wire to tie tie all five together.

CC1450 04-19-2011 03:07 PM

I've got to get one of those dunk tank deals set up, that is just too cool.

rpage83 04-19-2011 07:59 PM

CC1450, only 10 bucks for the 55 gal drum, five to seven t post laying around and 12 bucks for the lye product. It has help emensly in removing rust and paint. I have used a wire brush and or wheel to remove the stubborn paint. Overall, very impressed. Heres a closeup pic of that tower after some cleaning and primer.

CC1450 04-19-2011 08:47 PM

could you use a steel drum as the tank and hook the + up to the drum itself? Just curious, I have a steel 55 gallon drum here somewhere.

Those parts are coming out top notch. It's amazing what you learn around here just looking at the threads.

rpage83 04-19-2011 09:25 PM

Not sure if you could use a steel drum since your pos is the sacrificial anode. Maybe you could try, but do NOT touch it unless its disconnected. I have seen rebar, a welded ring that sat in the bottom and some just use a old lawn mower blade. I guess its up to the user. Let us know how it works out if you decide to do it.

Methos,
I plan on doing three tractors this summer, so I wont know for sure what I will be doing with it. I do know that we find yard tools and other left outside items that could use a good soaking every now and then.

CC1450 04-20-2011 10:40 AM

The tanks remind me of the "dip" in the movie who framed roger rabbit.

I would ask around about disposal when the time comes. With the 55 gals of water diluting the drain cleaner so much I imagine you could just dump it down the toilet 5 gals at a time, then bag and toss any sediment/solids left in the bottom.

rpage83 04-20-2011 12:10 PM

That is what I was thinking. Like I mentioned, I have two other tractors to do this summer and I have a buddy in the Haz Mat team around here. I will ask him later. Im guessing that with drain cleaner and water, sould be fine. Then as you mentioned, I could filter the remaining solids and possibly dry them, then throw it away.

I read some info about zinc coating on Matts webpage. Not sure if I want to play with different types of acid to get shinny bolts??????

I love how this works but being on a septic system I'm worried about the waste once I would be done with it. Not looking forward to crashing my septic system. Looking forward to any info on this.
