Project rear pto O
 

Well this has been a couple weeks in the making but it's home now so it's time to post pics! I found a pretty good deal on the rear pto now I've got to find the rest of the tractor to build around it. Not sure if you can see from the pics but serial # 2146. The splines on the pto show no signs of wear/use. I'm going to pull the axle tubes and replace the brass bushings and replace the seals then wait until I find the rest of the tractor. Going thru the gears the shift pattern is nice and tight. It's Jude's fault I got this I was having rear pto envy and located this one. Turns out the guy I got it from used to own my replacement loader adn is long time friend of Allen! So pretty small world.

Got a couple of questions...

Anyone happen to know if you have a danco creeper if it slows down the pto when your in low range?:bigthink: Seems like it would but thought I would ask.

Will a snow thrower drive shaft fit the pto shaft? I've got a couple of projects in mind but need to know the size of the pto shaft.:bigthink:

Saw that on ihccw.com and it's a REAR PTO INTERMEDIATE SHAFT SPLINE COUPLING ASSEMBLY!! I'm thinking that would work, man I'm getting hungry for some reason:biggrin2:

Yes, the creeper will slow the PTO...the creeper connects to the input of the trans, so everything is slowed down by it.

The shaft in Sminkey's picture is probably for an SGT with the electric rear PTO...the spline is different. It's possible that the snowthrower joint has the same spline, but unlikely. You may want/need to get a spline adapter to get the size up to a 1 3/8" - 6 spline or something more common like that.

ya you're right Matt, that shaft has pretty fine splines. Wouldn't work, a spline adapter sounds like a good idea!!

Thanks Matt that was my thoughts as well on creeper slowing the pto down. It just kinda made sense but when I asked people they didn't think it would for some reason.

I'll check around for a spline adaptor.

Hey Duke. you may want to check out a PTO knuckle and shaft from a Bolens tube frame to run their attachments....the splines look awfully similar to that of your cub...who knows...maybe youll get lucky with that! good find on the very low SN original...(part of an original) haha

Thanks Nick I've got a friend with some bolens I'll check with him. The low serial number plus the pto made me buy it and build a tractor around it. Even if I tried to talk my self out of it several times but hey it's all Jude's fualt!:ROTF2:

There is no rush on this project just going to see how the parts fall in line for me and see where it goes from there. Once I rebuild the rear end I'll put it on the shelf and wait on the rest. Unless Jude makes me speed the project up!:OhOh:

Nice score Methos! It may not be TOO hard to find the rest of the tractor,...since imo, you have the coolest, most important part already. I think you would be legal to run a k301 matched up to that bad boy, making the rest of the tractor come at a better price. Just something to think about, having to run things off the rear pto. with some AUTHORITY! But hey, I'am glad you have shared and are willing to show it off at some point.

the guy that hosts the montrose mn plowdays took a parts haban sickle mower and built it to run off the rear pto of a 122. it looked great and better then a factory would of made it. i had pictures on my blackberry but thats broken now....

Yes I do but no details to share yet.:Shhhh::Slap: There is alot going and I've got a list of things that I need to do and have happen and the SC PD coming up. I'm enjoying having all this cub stuff happening but my time frames have been pushed back and I'm just letting everything sort it self out. Everything is going to happen just in steps. Here's a rough list of things without details of course.:BlahBlah:

Replacement loader, this is the top of the list and everything else happens after it gets picked up.
Jude's collection begins it's processing.
Project new mower begins!
The plow day on 3-19 fits in here someplace
More processing more of Jude's collection.
Project O Tenn trip is being planned now.:biggrin2:
2 day cub invasion begins :Woo:
More processing of Jude's collection!
Jude's vist and loading of his collection goes home
Project O search of parts begins!

And some other things that I really can't say anything about yet. But project Red has failed and has been buried. Cleaning of the garage has begun and I need more room and I've got a idea to help but my better half has concerns about cub over load/too many cubs, so we'll see how this sorts it's self out.

i had picked up this cub last year it was "stuck"

turns out the valve was stuck, the head was burnt, starter generator was froze, and missing the tank

it had a nice 100 hood on it and rear pto

i got it running and actually cut grass with it

gave $100 for the tractor and $15 or so for the head then a gasket and and tank

(the ags were not on there when i bought it )
i dont know what the draw is to the rear pto because there isnt much to run off of them

HAHA Thanks! I forgot to add the list of things that I'm trying to locate for friends still. Plus I've got a friend that wants me to sell his collection of GT's he only has 250-300 depending on if he's staying in the hobby or getting out of the hobby mood of the day.:biggrin2: Still waiting for the price on that one.

I blame Jude for me getting my rear pto.:biggrin2: I want to do some parades and shows with it plus use it to pull my son's caboose around with it as well. I gave Jude a good idea to use his pto but still trying to figure out something cool for me to sure mine for.

I guess it's time for a update on this old thread. I've got a early style SG from Lew this past summer. A couple weeks ago got thick front axle and collard spindles from Lew as well. I've got a early 61 frame from Eric this past spring. KSanders aka Kevin sold me a early dash tower. Gary hooked me up when I went to see him this past spring with a rebuilt steering column and clutch! I've got a rechromed bird for it and IH emblem that will need some touch ups to make it look good. I've got a NOS K181 to power it. I've made a trade for a NOS cater carb for it as well. I don't plan on running a oil bath filter on it. The plan is build it and then tear it down and paint it. I've never worked on a O before so this should be fun.

I'm still a long way from starting on this got a lot of other things I need to take care of first but wanted to provide a update. It's slow process but it'll so be worth it when I get done with it. Thanks to the great people on OCC with helping me out with reduced prices and some freebies to really help offset the cost of this project!

Anyone got a pic of the early batery wire tie down by chance? I think eric said he had pics of it but not sure.:bigthink:

Some updates to this old thread.:biggrin2:

I pulled the NOS K181 engine from the 71 to put into the O. I've got to switch oil pans still but will get to that this week. Once I thin out the herd I'll start assembly of the O.

When I took the gas tank off I saw yellow paint! The motor doesn't look like it's been repainted. I pulled the head off to check and see if the motor had been rebuilt. The laste pic with a red circle shows it stamped STD. (hard to see but it's ther) So huge relief there. Not sure why there is yellow on the tins tho. Maybe the tins had been replaced before?:bigthink:

As you can see there is some carbon build up and I'll check the head for flatness and put a new head gasket on it.
