Changing tire sizes
 

Anybody change tire sizes to speed up or slow your tractor down? My 100 is too slow in second gear and too fast in third. Is there anything else I could do to change the gearing?

You can completely regear your trans. I know of a company who makes and or sells about anything you could want for tractor pulling. You can buy everything brand new, except the cast iron case from these guys. I Do Not Know if I am allowed to say who they are, but You can search the internet for flathead performance

Hi Varmit, You must have a 16 or 17 tooth 2nd gear.(just the right speed for my 100 mowing) Most other tractors had a 19 tooth 2nd gear, ( just do a 2/3 combo gear swap) I even have a couple sets around want to trade?

The only way he is gonna "fix" the problem is to regear the transmission. A change in tire size may fix the issue with one gear but it will amplify the problem with the other gear. A taller tire will make second faster but it will also speed up third. And on the other hand a shorter tire will make 3rd gear slower but it will slow down 2nd also. A creeper is gonna make everything slower, a bunch. Kinda like dropping a 4X4 into low range.

There are 2 ways that V@rmint could use to change the rear wheel speed in 2nd gear.

One way is to change the upper gear in the reduction housing from a 12 tooth to a 13 tooth gear. The 13 tooth gear is not a factory gear from Cub Cadet. You will have to go to a place that sells puller parts for Cub Cadets. The 13 tooth gear is better known as a 10% overdrive in the sites that sells puller parts. Expect to pay $75 to $100 for the 10% overdrive. You will need a gasket, seal and bearing to do the job.

Another way is to change 2 gear. during the production run the 70 and 100 had 2 different 2nd gear ratios. The early serial numbers (65458 to 96765) had a 16 tooth 2nd gear and later 70-100s (96766 and above) had a 19 tooth 2nd gear. It sounds like you have a early serial number 100.

Cub Cadet had 3 different 2nd gear ratios. There was a 16 and 19 tooth gear that the Cub Cadet 70 and 100 plus later models used. The other one was a 17 tooth. I have a 100 with a 16 tooth and a 70 with a 19 tooth. My 100 like V@rmint's 100 is a little slow when pulling the moldboard plow. My 70 seams to be a little too fast when pulling the plow.....runs out of power. Biggest part of the problem is the difference in horse power between the 2.
I want to change the 2nd gear in my 100...haven't deside which gear (17 or 19 tooth) I will use. I may try the 10% overdrive set up first since I have one to try.

A little side note:
Cub Cadet did have a problem with 16 tooth gear not holding up. I had a 12 inch plow behind my 100 and haven't broke the gear. I do plow in 2nd gear. The motor is modified in my 100...making more power than it did from the factory.

The creaper gear has a 4 to 1 reduction when it is engage. It will be too slow to do any good besides tilling, running a snow thrower or slow tractor racing.

How hard is it to swap out the gears? I've done a lot of engine work, but don't have much transmission or differential experience.

There is a Chassis Service manual for your 100 in the Technical Section of this site. It has the information to take your trans apart.

Thanks for the input, you guys are full of it (information that is) lol. After looking at the manual, I think I'll just pick up a pair of used 13" wheels and tires. I just need a little more speed in second gear when I mow. I realize that it will make third gear faster but it's so fast now that it's virtually unusable anyhow. I can easily switch them back if it doesn't work the way I want.

That's probably going to raise the rear enough to tilt the rear of the deck up and throw off the geometry of the carriage. They don't make lawn and garden tires for 13" wheels, either.

Excuse my ignorance, but why is this such a huge deal? I haven't crunched the numbers, but you probably won't even increase your speed by 1 mph. The deck will cut better if you are going a little slower, anyway. The tractors with the fast second gear go a little too fast to do a good job mowing in some conditions.

Just get a trans out of a later model. It would be easier to change out the whole rear then piecing the trans gears together. Or even to find 13" wheels and tires.

Don't bother with getting larger tires. By the time you get tires with a diameter that will actually increase the speed of the tractor, the mower deck will probably not fit and if it does it will not sit level or cut properly. You are much better off finding a transmission with a 19 tooth second if you want a faster second gear. I have a 106 and I quit mowing with it because the 19 tooth was too fast for my liking.

I like to cut in 3rd with my 1200. Got to mow bout twice a week during the growing season, but it sure is nice blowing through the yard in about 20 minutes.:biggrin2:

No kidding...if I did that I'd have to visit the chiropractor after every mowing. Not to mention mowing that fast isn't the safest thing to do, either.

No neck brace and yes, as long as I keep the yard short, I can cut in third. Guy next door with the murray gets torqued. It is amusing when I go out after he's got bout a third done. Then when I am blowing the grass clippings off the deck and putting the 1200 back in the shed he still has a third left.:biggrin2:
