100's maiden voyage

Well I put a seat on the 100 the other day just so I could take it out for a spin. Man was it cool:biggrin2:
I had one heck of a time getting my leg over the center and shifter, but with the wife pulling, we got on:beerchug: and away I went.
Felt good going for a ride after all the work, getting it from a tractor that was destin for the bone yard to another classic that will be with me for years to come, then handed down for someone else to enjoy.
It was such a neat feeling cruising on a classic tractor, a (1964 Cub Cadet 100) those new tractors have nothing on these old iron machines:beer2:
The hand controles worked great too!

Great job Zippy - She's beautiful!

Real nice shop there too!

Congrats, I couldn't be more impressed. You did a fantastic job on those hand controls. You should be very proud of your tractor, and very proud of yourself to. You look great on it Zippy1:beerchug:. Keep up the good work.

Awesome pics, Zippy! Glad you got the ride the 100! They are a joy to drive. :beerchug:

Great job Zippy! Your 100 looks sweet, and your hand brake looks factory. Do you think the center and shifter is going to keep being a problem for you? Any solution to it? Thanks for sharing your pics!

Yeh I'm thinking so. See with the hydro's I don't have the shifter to contend with while sliding my leg through as I'm getting on. What I do is get the chair as close as possible, (tight to the tire) put my right foot on the tunnel, grab the wheel and pull myself on with my foot sliding through to the other side. Shifter is a problem.:bash2:

That's a bummer. Unless your wife doesn't mind helping you get on and off it would be a pain not to be able to use that sweet looking 100. Got any thoughts on what to do yet?

Nice work zippy1
I agree, Something about the feel of the older machines.
Great pictures of you and your Cub

Sweet 100 and nice trophy room! It looks like I'm going to get to try my 100 out in the next couple of days. We're supposed to get 8-12 inches of snow tonight and tomorrow. Hope you find a way to get some good use for yours.

Sweet Zippy!

Looking great there bud:beerchug: Fantastic work on the hand controls, what about shortening the shifter to get it out of the way??

Duke, what do you think I have her for?:biggrin2: I got the 100 for almost nothing and knew it would be hard to get on being a standard shift tractor, but it's more the nostalgic thing about just having one. I'm thinking it won't get alot of use, maybe more of a Sunday afternoon ride! Or maybe a complete restoration in the future, and put up on a wall in the shop, but it would be a shame to let it just sit.
I really don't need it for a work horse, I have my pickup with a plow and ATV with a plow and my 1110 with a blower, so I have the snow removal covered. I'm going to put the 125 to work cutting grass along with the 1330 and 1420, so that's covered too.
It's just nice having one more than anything.

I got a PM with the same idea, never thunk of that:bash2: not looking right now at the tractor. But wondering (don't wonder to far, I'll get lost) if I could make up a linkage and somehow relocate the shifter to the side of the frame? Goofy idea?:bigthink: But the world was founded on some pretty (goofy) ideas.
What do you think? Be gentle now:Choke:

I got a solution!!! Seems as how your handy with tools,
1: measure about an inch and a half from the curve at the base of the shifter. Cut the shifter.
2: find a 2 inch long steel tube with an ID just larger than the OD of the shifter stub.
3: put the cut off end of the shifter one inch into the tube. Drill a hole through both parts large enough for a spring clip to go through.
4: put a spring clip in to hold peices together.
5; push assembly onto the shifter stub on the transmission.
6: weld it on.

Now, pull out the spring clip, pull out the the shifter handle out of the tube. Now your path is clear for your feet. Once on the wonderful machine, place shifter handle back into the tube, instert spring clip and you enjoy :)

I hope this makes sense...

100 Shifter Modification

I have a short stick shifter removed from a 582 that PO cut to get his girth on/off the tractor. Would be proud to send it to you free of charge, would make a fine candidate to begin your fabrication. Just let me know and it's yours friend!

zippy1 02-01-2011 10:09 AM

Good idea Tyler. I'm up for anything I guess.
I done run out of ideas, so all are appriciated.
Tractor2nv I would be glad to except your offer, if you don't need the shifter. It's worth a try anyway. Forgive me, but will that shifter fit on a 100?
Thanks to everyone

I like Tyler's idea too. To expand on it a little, how about maybe using a heavy duty pneumatic quick connect? Either weld or thread the male end to the lose end of the shifter handle, and the female end to the shifter stub?

All cub cadet gear drive shifters are interchangable

zippy1 02-01-2011 03:46 PM

Some good idea's everyone. I think I will start by working on the shifter, and play with that and see what happens.
Thanks again.
