Engine Cradle Upgrade

I understand the engine cradle upgrade for wide frames allows for longer idolater life but does it help cut back on engine lope? Seems like it would.

At lower engine speeds mine just shakes like a Muscle car with a radical cam in it! Want to calm it down so it doesn't shake other parts loose and cause cracks in certain places.

What is the RPMs at idle?
What do y'all use for a tach?

I use a Sirometer. Sold as a Tecumseh part # 670156 RC.

I guess I would like a digital tachometer but this works and is kinda cool once you discover that it works on the principle of organized chaos.:beer2:

Not much different from a reed tach.
I'll check the local power equipment shop.
One question though, what about using it on engines that have those counterbalance shafts? I think the 16Hp Kohler in mine is supposed to have one.

Thanks

My Dad added an extra brace to the cradle on his 1450.

This tractor is used only to work ground (plow-till-cultivate).

I have used it on both types. With and without balance gears. It works.

Thanks very much. I'll get one ordered Monday.

Anybody ever use this tach? Price is right.

Presently, I set the governor top speed with a Stihl chainsaw tach, (almost a must have for tuning chainsaws), it works by holding it next to the spark plug, thru it's internal inductive pickup.

Also, I understand it's not good to idle a K Series single too slow as that can damage the compression release system.

The ACR system is suppose to engage/disengage at around 600 RPM's. This is well below the minimum RPM for idle.

Agreed, on the 600 RPM idle spec, I should have mentioned that in my earlier reply, Thanks.

But many are tempted to slow the engines way below that spec, just for the "cool" factor. The heavy flywheel on a K series single will allow for that.

That is called lugging your engine and a great way to break your crank.

I know this was an old post, and hate to bump this but do you know the radius your father used to roll that secondary bar? I like the looks of that as far as rigidity much better. My problem is I'll have to have it fabricated as I don't have the tools for it, then have a friend weld it in.

Thanks in advance.

Dad started to bend the metal until he ended with is in the picture.

With a 3 foot length of that size steel, you could bend it with your hands!!

Give it a try, that small of steel is very easy to bend with that large of radius.

Bend the 3 foot piece, then cut out what you need out of the center.

I bought this for a tach. http://www.meter-depot.com/img/Tach_04.jpg :biggrin2:
