1970's Cub Cadet Model 800?

I been offered a very nice looking Cub Cadet model 800 that has been garage kept its entire life. It is a rather large tractor with a mowing deck and what I believe was a 8hp Kolher engine, the engine has low compression from a suspected burnt valve. I have tried to do some research on the net but I have turned up very little on the 800, I suppose because it was only built for a couple years. The website I was reading stated that the 800 is one of the rarest Cub Cadet tractors ever built. Anyone here know anything about the model 800 and if it is as rare as I have been lead to believe?

Thank you
Johnnie

Johnnie.
Sounds like you have been offered the holy grail of cub cadet tractors.Yes it is rare and I would grab it lickity split.
Happy New Year!!

Yes, the model 800 is a fairly rare model.

The 800 is from a series of Cub Cadets referred to as 'Quietlines'. As you know, it came with a 8hp Kohler cast iron engine, that sits on a set of engine mounting rails suspended by 'ISO mounts' (the ISO mounts, flex couplings in the drive line, engine side covers, and the box around the muffler/front exit muffler was designed to transmit less vibration to the operator, and to make the machine 'quieter' than previous models)...it is also has an electric PTO clutch, gear drive transmission, cast iron front axle, and a cast iron transaxle.

The 8hp engine has some specific parts, that the 10,12,14, and 16hp engines didn't have......the starter, air filter housing, and I believe the muffler, are smaller because of the 8hp engine.

Besides the engine, the 800 is the same machine as the other Quietline gear drive models 1000 (10hp), and the model 1200 (12hp).

The QL series also included these hydrostatic transmission models:
1250 (12hp)
1450 (14hp)
1650 (16hp)

Any/All of these machines are Garden Tractors...true, you can attach a mower deck and mow your yard, but they also can plow a garden, till the garden, cultivate the garden, run a snow thrower, clear your driveway with a front mounted snow blade/push dirt and stone with the same blade, and run several other implements. To buy a comperable model of GT in the modern world, you would have to spend at or above $5,000.

Sounds like I might want to call the feller back and see what he wants for the tractor. The only attachment he has is the mowing deck and it has only been used for mowing his yard, never been used to its true potential. It looked to be spotless and all the paint/decals are in top notch shape. If I end up buying it I will have to post some pictures.

Got one more question for anyone who can, or will, answer. What is a fair price on a Cub Cadet 800, that has low compression? I don't want to low ball the feller, well I should say I don't want to low ball him to bad. What if he comes back with a price of $100, $300, $500, $1000........ What is the cut off point where I say "That is just to much."

A lot depends on what the overall shape its in. Location has a lot to do with pricing as well. What options does it have other then the mowing deck? One of the reasons it was a rarer model is the fact it only had a 8hp while all the other models at the time had 10-16hp motors. If you've got a pic please post it that will help out with pricing but location effects pricing.

The man is suppose to talk to his father about a price and send me some pictures. The only attachment is the mower deck, the tractor has only been used as a mower. The paint looks very good, panels are straight, it has been kept clean and in a garage it`s entire life. I believe you get the idea on the condition. I did find out that the engine was checked out by a local shop and it does have low compression from a suspected valve problem. The tractor runs but is very low on power. The tractor is in south western Virginia.

Looking forward to the pics. The thing effecting price is the vavle problem. I rebuild might be in order.

I will agree that the engine could be a issue. All I know is the engine messed up last year and it was checked by a local shop, could be a wide range of issues causing low compression. If I purchase the tractor I do not have plans to use to very much, so I have all the time in the world to get the engine right.

Roanoker494 01-03-2011 08:23 PM

Heard back from the man today and his dad said $200 and it is mine. They are pretty sure that the lower engine cover panel are still there and in very good shape, but lets assume they are not there because they are not 100% sure.

Make sure to bounce them about the air filter, and the engine side covers. ;)

I figured the tractor was worth $200. I figure that a set of side covers will not not be to hard to come by, now what they will cost me may be another story. They said the covers were there a year ago when the engine messed up, so hopefully they are still laying there somewhere.

What Bill said! I'd have to go to the ER to have my arm checked to see if it was broken from reaching for my wallet.:biggrin2.gif: Looking forward to your pics of it being loaded up!

Roanoker494 01-03-2011 09:17 PM

Well, the tractor is paid for and I plan to pick it up Friday. I would have taken it tonight but I have to borrow a trailer and it is unavailable until then. When I called the man back he ended up being two rows over from me in the Wal-Mart parking lot, talk about "meant to be". He said he would look for the side panels and get the tractor dug out of the corner this week. Don't worry because it will be no "trailer queen", I plan to use to it plow the garden this spring and mow the yard on occasion.

That's awesome news! Funny about being in so close in the parking lot.

Congrats!

Congrads on the 800!!!
It is a beauty!!

Roanoker494 01-03-2011 09:30 PM

I may have mentioned it before but the owners son owns a business repairing marine engines. He told me that he scoped the engine and the piston/cylinder looks good. He also said that oil in the cylinder did not help the compression, that is why it is assumed the compression issue is valve related.

ajgross 01-03-2011 11:09 PM

It looks like it still has the original "Small" starter on it. Besure to keep that around. they are almost impossible to find and when you do find them for sale, they sell for almost as much as you just paid for that tractor.

johncub7172 01-03-2011 11:39 PM

Way to go!

Boy, you sure did come across a heck of a deal! Congrats.! Wow! You can now eaziely get 3x's as much money for it. Consider another IHCC as a flog-child. I think your IHCC 800 should have a nice eazy life! Seriously, put it on the back burnner and find another! Thanks, John

Oak 01-03-2011 11:50 PM

I agree with Johncub. With only 2,345 of them built I wouldn't use it as a worker. I think I would go through the engine and only clean and polish the rest of it up. The original finish looks nice. That is a real collector item.
I would love to find one of those someday. I missed one in Pittsburg PA last summer for twice that and it was in boxes.

Roanoker494 01-04-2011 12:27 AM

It got the better of me so I told the seller about the history of the model 800 and he could probably get twice the money for it. He said he did not much care and $200 was what he wanted. I gave him a big Okie Dookey as I handed him the money, he even offered to bring it to me for free. I declined the delivery option and told him I will pick it up Friday. I feel like I have already taken advantage of him, guess it is more like he took advantage of himself, and making him bring it to me would surely bring some kind of bad Karma.

ACecil 01-04-2011 01:25 AM

Awesome score on the 800! :beerchug:

Roanoker494 01-04-2011 03:52 AM

I will have to agree, this mower is to nice to be used on a regular basis. I will go through the engine and bring it out every once in a while to keep it moving, maybe mow the yard. Only have about a acre to mow and it is all level with only a couple tress that I keep trimmed up pretty high.

Oak 01-04-2011 08:24 AM

Roanoker, don't let it bother you. To some people, Cubs are just worn-out old lawn mowers and they have no interest in them. They were used as a tool to mow grass. You gave him his full asking price and he is happy and you got an excellent deal. Great find, keep us posted.:beerchug:

Dave R 01-04-2011 11:33 AM

$200...

If I were you and had the $200 to spare I would take it home before someone changed their mind.

The engine low compression could be something as simple as some crud under a valve and it isn't completely closing.

Grab it and run with it.
Dave in SW Missouri

Mlamar 01-04-2011 12:21 PM

How about this

Since it's missing the side panels you might as well double your money on it by selling it to me. I promise to love it and take care of it as long as I live:bigthink:
Okay, so your gonna keep it. What a great way to start the new year. I know guys that would give up two or three Cubs for that 800 if it's got the original starter, muffler and muffler box. One of the nicest I've seen and I have 3 myself.

That is the impression I got from the man. The tractor was his lawn mower that has now served it`s purpose. His son takes care of the property now and he seems to be spoiled by that big hydrostatic Husky, told me the clutch was to much hassle.

I was laying in bed last night thinking the same thing, could just be carbon not allowing the valve to seat. I can`t wait to get the head off and see what is going on.

Not only is it a heck of a way to start the new year but a heck of a way to start a collection, this will be my first Cub Cadet.

I had one Cub Cadet three years ago, now I want them all.:biggrin2.gif:

That is what I am afarid of, that is how my current chainsaw problem started. I bought a Husky 51 that soon turned into three. Then a 272 found its way here, a 268 soon followed. Then I was on Ebay and found a sweet 2100 out of Canada. Now I have so many I don`t even know how many I have
...... I have Husky, Stihl, homelite, poulan, McCulloch, Lancaster, David Bradley and about anything else you can come up with.

ihnick 01-04-2011 07:39 PM

my dad has a husky 262 xp which i think is the 272s little brother. man does that saw cut. tons of power and rev and is still very smooth. beats the heck out of our stihl thats about the same engine size. but the stihl is only about a 400 dollar saw where the 262 was about a 700 dollar saw. anyways congrats on your 800 :beer2:

Roanoker494 01-05-2011 03:03 AM

I got good news today and the man does have the side panels and air filter for the tractor. I am hoping to be able to pick the tractor up sometime tomorrow, but it may end up being Friday.

I am not 100% sure where the 262 falls into the line up, but I have owned one and it was no slouch. They say the newer versions, the 372 and 572, are even better than the old "2" series I am own, but I have never tried one of the newer ones out.

johncub7172 01-05-2011 10:06 AM

I lived in nw montana and know enuff about chain saws. Most people are running a Stihl or a Husky. I had a Husky and my dad a Stihl. The Stihl ran for 20+ years! I'am running a Sthil here in O-hi-ya! The old Homolights were better than todays...IMO.! What a way to get introduced to IHCC!! Cant wait to see pictures! Happy New year everyone! Cheers!:beerchug:

The complete 800 came home today. I started a new thread at http://onlycubcadets.net/forum/showt...ed=1#post53823 with all the pictures.

cub cadet 800

.I have cub cadet 800 that run and drives do some yard work . looking for the stock muffler and air box. little under power

red56turbo 09-04-2012 11:50 PM

JLM,
Those mufflers are scarce like hen's teeth and impossible to find. The actual muffler box is the same as the other quietlines. The piece that's different is the aluminum bracket that bolts to the engine that the muffler box screws onto. Throw a wanted add up and see what happens.
