1864 rockshaft removal
 

Trying to pull the rockshaft from my parts 1864 and am stuck at the last step of removing it. I removed both the end bushing things but the rockshaft doesn't seem to have enough clearance to come out of the frame... how exactly is it supposed to come out?

It has been a while, but I think you push part #1 as far to the left as possible and then remove #8.

That's what I thought, but #1 doesn't quite move far enough left to let #8 clear the frame. It's just a hair off but no matter how I rotate it, it hits the frame before moving far enough.

Did you remove the roll pin #2 ?

Yeah, I did. I've got everything out of the rockshaft area except the rockshaft itself.

That doesn't include the 1864, which has a different rockshaft. Im just going to use a bottle jack to shove the frame rails apart and do the same on my 782D when I go to put the rockshaft in it.
The 782D rockshaft is extremely worn out and barely gets attachments off the ground because the lift arm has a deep groove worn in it.

I asked a family friend who worked for cub cadet in the 90s when the 1864 came out, and he said that they called cub cadet for workshop manuals and cub cadet just sent them the Command service manual and said that there's no service manual for the 1864 because they were similar enough that it didn't matter.
I suppose that there is no written procedure for removing the rockshaft so I'm gonna have to wing it.

if it doesn't fit, force it, if it breaks it probably needed replacing anyway.

Did you remove parts 9 and 10 from 8? That could buy you another eighth of an inch.
I know it can be done, because I installed one on them 1541 when I converted it to an 1864. The trouble is a did this 15 years ago, so I don't remember how I did it. You may have to remove the drive shaft.
Spreading the frame rails is a bad idea in my mind, unless you only need a small amount of room to do the job.

I have the procedure for the 1864
1 remove right foot plate.
remove hydraulic cylinder,
remove/replace rock shaft.
reassemble.
thats it.
Not sure if the shaft will work in a 782 as it is a whole different setup.

I only need like 1/16" more clearance to get it out. I might actually just pull the deck lift arms in a little bit to get just enough clearance to get it free.
I have literally everything removed in that area, the tractor is just a bare frame with a dash and the rockshaft on it. The rockshaft is the last thing I want to remove before the rest goes in the scrap pile.

Can you post a pic of the shaft showing what you have removed?

Got it out... You have to turn part #8 toward the back of the tractor and then rotate the whole rockshaft as far back as possible and then lift it out of the top of the frame. It doesn't have enough clearance to go out the bottom and barely clears the top of the frame rails.

If I could kick myself in the balls, I would, for wasting the few precious moments of life that I have left reading about your foibles on how to remove a rockshaft.
