K301 in model 123, need rear oil seal
 

My 123 developed an oil leak that appeard to be coming from behind the pulley that is driven by the starter/generator. I have taken everything apart so I could see the rear shaft coming out of the case. I believe I need P/N 4703207.
Can someone give me an idea of how that seal gets replaced now that I have access to it?

Run 3 short screws into the seal equally spaced and pry it out.
To install the new seal push a piece of pipe the same diameter as the outer edge of the seal work well, or gently tapping on the outer edge with a rubber mallet works. But be gently you don't want to warp the seal.

As for where to get a seal I can't help you there I use a local shop.

Well, 1966..... now it's 2026........ I'd say that's not too bad! (I don't know if any other engine work has been done other than me replacing a broken connecting rod a couple of years ago.)

Here's something interesting I found. A NAPA part that is listed as a replacement for OEM 4703207, but in the specs it only lists the Kohler 10hp.

This seal turned out to be the Proline part. Of course, it works good. I have asked NAPA to get me 2 more for my shelf.

I also cleaned and repacked the PTO bearing. The 123 is now ready for the PTO to be installed.

Before that happens, I have ordered a new friction disc and an adjustment gauge for the PTO. Figured I would put this thing back together properly…..

Well, my disc and gauge arrived today..... USPS came through nicely this time. Unfortunately, I won't be able to do anything with it until at least next Tuesday.
I have never adjusted the PTO assemby, but think I have plenty of information AND the gauge to get it done. Once I get it back together, I have another test to do: I'm going to try an A144 belt to see if it will drive the tiller ok. I really think it is asinine what the "correct" belt costs.... absolutely ridiculous. They build a very nice GT AND tiller, but insist on using a stupid-size belt, then charge a small fortune for it.

Got the new PTO clutch disc installed and adjusted, installed back on the 123, and everything else reinstalled. Changed the oil. Everything is ready to go, but I needed to charge the battery overnight before I can start the tractor.

Well, got it all back together, tiller belt on, PTO on/off adjusted….. did good running in the shed. One day soon, I’ll get it in the garden and see how it does.
Other than the seat, I am really pleased with this 123 that is three years newer than me!

(I bought this 123 several years ago mainly because it came with a tiller, but it also came with a good-condition mower deck. The deck works good, but I haven’t had it install for years. Seems like I remember paying $500 for all of it…. Maybe 2008? Doing research about the tiller: I found out that IH contracted with a shop about 30 miles away from my hometown of Tulsa (Claremore, OK) to build the tiller! The guy who owned the shop was some kind of relation to the family that still builds the Danhuser (sp?) post hole diggers. I don’t know if it was an exclusive contract, but that shop was at least one that built them.)

Yesterday was a wonderful day. Got to spend HOURS on my GTs!!!

First, I got out my Wheel Horse C160, installed the mid and rear cultivators and used it to break up the crusty surface of the garden area.

Then, I got the Cub Cadet 123 out and tilled the entire area to make a good seed bed. The PTO cluch worked nicely, and the A144 belt worked wonderfully. VERY pleased with the outcome.

Got some collard greens, kale, Black Seeded Simpson lettuce, bibb lettuce, and yellow watermelon planted, FINALLY. I might set out a few tomato plants.... not sure yet.

We have a LOT of canned goods on the shelves, so we really don't NEED to plant for that kind of stuff, but I AM going to plant some Roma II green beans. That will happen today..... I have the seeds soaking in some rain water at the moment.
