Buying a new Cub cadet. So many options

My 2010 Cub Cadet SLTX-1050 has officially kicked the bucket.
Model # 13WQ92AP010
Kohler engine SV730

I have replaced nearly 80% of the original parts to keep it going this long. Got many good years out of it but it's time for something new.

  1. I need something robust that can cut a yard that is up to 3 acres.
  2. Is robust enough for plowing snow in winter (SLTX-1050 was a champ!)
  3. Don't need bells and whistles, but comfort is important in old age.
  4. Can tow heavy loads with an attached 2-wheeled cart.
  5. The wider the cutting deck the better. SLTX-1050 was 50".
  6. A transmission that can handle moderate hills without overheating.

Reviewing this site for days, I've concluded the XT2 GX54D model would be a good fit but I think it's discontinued. Based on expert opinions in here, are their models that replaced the XT2 GX54D which have similar/same specifications? Suggested other models?

A friend told me dont get the SLX 50 if I'll be pulling a 2-wheeled cart behind it filled with wood or pushing snow because it'll blow the transmission, and to find one that uses the K58 or K62 transmission. Would the XT2 GX50 with the K58 transmission be sufficient?

Thank you

Have you considered something more heavy duty like Kubota or john deere?
Today,
MTD makes average homeowner equipment, not compact utility tractors, which
sounds like what you are looking for.:bigthink:

It's the XT2 GX50 that has been discontinued Not the XT2 GX54D

Ive had my 54D for about a year. Very much meets my needs and expectations. If your thinking about moving snow or your property has hills you definitely should go with the 54D as it has the manual differential lock which will be mandatory for moving heavy snow. Ive done several functional upgrades that makes a great LT even better.

Is this a test to test loyalty to Cub Cadets?

Thank you. I was hoping that was the case :biggrin2:

I think the GX54D has the Kohler engine instead of the Kawasaki. Is that something to be worried about?

Not really. My friend's 2017 XT2 GX 54D has over 3000 hours with a Kohler engine. The only engine issue he had was an oil drain, which Kohler updated and fixed through a recall, and the current Kohlers have the corrected oil drain.

If You want a Kawasaki version You can get it here https://www.craftsman.com/en-us/prod...ing-lawn-mower either at an Ace Hardware or a Lowes store

Wow, that is a lot of hours in a short amount of time. How many acres does mow with it?

I meant it in all sincerity, if I need tool to do a job and a store does not have it, I go to another store to get what I need to do the job.
I have many pieces of equipment on my farm, all different colors but you can bet they are are very old like me, none of it is throw -a-way, with built in obsolescence made in the last 30-40 years.
By no means did I mean to offend, just make you aware that blind allegiance sometimes causes remorse when a choice was made and it is not able to accomplish what we wanted or needed.

I don't purchase a hand shovel when the job calls for a Backhoe.
And I understand a Backhoe is a bit of an overkill to dig flower bed.

I hope you find a capable piece of equipment at a fair price that will make glad you chose it and it lasts a lifetime. :beerchug:

I never knew that those two models were basically the same!
It's an open ended question with no perfect answer, but do you have any thoughts as to which one, based on what tends to break on these things (cub cadet vs craftsman) is 'easier' to fix and/or which tends to break less often?

That I can't answer because, except for the engine, front axle, and paint color, they are the same tractor. With the XT2 GX54D, you get easier dealer support. With the Craftsman, you get a Kawasaki and a much tighter turn radius. And both have the same parent company, Stanley/MTD.

Or.....
you could base your choice on winning colors...

After months of deliberating, I realized I dont need a tractor to plow snow anymore because I pay someone to do it now :HeeHee:

Now that that variable is gone, could I buy a cubcadet that can still cut ~3 acres of grass, tow stuff behind it like grass clippings, dead branches, dirt, etc, and have enough oompf to go up hills whicl cutting the grass, but possibly be less expensive than the Cub Cadet XT2 GX54D?

Maybe I wouldnt need the K62? and yet.. i dont think the K58 is servicible. (?)

Eh, not really. Guess a ST54 would do it if you want a tractor.

Any reason not to get a zero turn?

None of the Cub Cadets are marketed as having a serviceable transmission.
Currently there are not any Cubs with a K58. Your choice in Cub Lawn tractors is a K46.
If you still want to mow 3 acres with a tractor, I would still recommend either the Cub XT2 GX 54D or the Craftsman models I recommended. Those K62s can be refilled through the battery box on the tractors, and the K62 has drain plugs. The K46 does not have a drain plug, and it would have to be removed from the tractor to drain, or you could get an electric extractor pump to drain from the fill hole.

Look for a used Cub Cadet XT3 GS, GSE, or GSX, or look for a used John Deere X300 series with a K58 or a John Deere X500—all have serviceable K72s, and all X500s have hydraulic power steering and hydraulic lift except for the X500, X520, or X570 models with manual steering and foot Pedal manual spring-assist lift.

Or Look for a Cub Cadet Zero turn with at Least hydro-gear ZT2800 TRANSMISSIONS I would suggest a steering wheel Model

much aprreciated response. OKKKKKKkkk then. I will continue to cry as I look at the price tag of the Cub XT2 GX 54D and after speaking with the sales rep, he gave a final price of $5,300. No idea if thats a rip off or a good deal. Why cant they just give me one for free i beg the question.

You can mow a lot more, faster, for less with a ZTR.

Wow, the 54D has gone up quite a bit. I bought mine in 11/2024 and paid $4699 (msrp) . I put about $1800 cash down, and financed the rest using the Cub Cadet 0% financing promo . (of course I had to pay a $150 "buy in fee" to get the financing ). Cost me $80 / mo .
