Can’t figure out what I got
Hey guys, I bought this for my son. He is 5 and wanted a pulling tractor. There is a number on the rear axle but I cannot figure out how to determine any information from it. Is there anyway I can research this number?
Thank you so much. I have pics of tractor but will need to get any engine pics later, as the tractor is at my grandparents where we left it to work on it. Also, I tried posting the pics I have but couldn’t see where to post then. Thank you again! |

Hoping this worked. Here is a picture, if so. Thank you!
|
Post the number here. I am sure someone will be able to identify as a serial number or part number.
|
Looks to me like a 70 or 100. Would be a a shame to ruin a good tractor like tha to make a puller in my opinion.

Here is the other side.
The numbers I have found on the mower are Rear axle - 173545 Left side of engine - 3234756 |
The Engine should have a Model Tag on it. A 7hp will have K-161 and a 10HP will have a K-241.
That picture "looks" like a 7HP engine, thus it would be a Tractor Model: 70. |
I think with that style muffler it would be a 100.
|
So through a little more digging I found this thread from the last owner. https://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/...ad.php?t=35498
Even through that thread, there is some confusion on what this thing is. He believes it is a 70 with 8HP engine. Either way it’s neat. Just trying to figure it out so I can know which parts and such to buy. |

The Kohler K-161 (7HP) engine was/is replaced by the Kohler K-181 (8HP) engine. Thus, a model 70 could have an 8HP engine.
Again, the Kohler Engine Model Tag will tell all. |
Thank you Roland. I will check it out in a couple days, when I get back to my granddads house to work on it. I believe the tag is missing, but I will take better pictures.

When you spend time with your children is a priceless time that they will always remember and so will you. It’s your machine , do what you want. The look of his face in the pictures shows he’s happy with your purchase. I know you both will enjoy the journey . There are good resources here and a lot of knowledge. Have fun.
|
The Model 70 & 100 are identical, EXCEPT for their engines.
:IH Trusted Hand: |
Thank y’all! This engine will need some work. Tractor came with two spare engines. They need work but are bigger. I will probably rebuild those and try to install here.
Having an issue with spark right now. Waiting on parts. |
IIRC the 70's had an acorn nut and the 100's had a plastic cap on the steering wheel. That looks a little big for a 7HP air cleaner cover but ya never know what the PO did. Nice little tractor, enjoy.

Enjoy your tractor with your son. Many memories he will never forget. Edit, sorry if I made any whiny liberals mad. just trying to be funny. :BB&YS: |
Dammit diesel. Now I like you. Hah. Let’s all enjoy this. Thank you, I just want to do what my son wants to do. I respect your love for these machines, but more than that I respect my sons love for cool shit. Hah.
He likes anything with a motor and wheels but he fell in love with these tractors at the pull we went to. Hopefully new points will be in, in the next day or two. Hopefully we get this thing Running soon! I picked up new tires yesterday. 23x10.50-12. Should look great on the tractor. |

The rims for 10.50 tires are much wider, so unless you are also getting new rims, your mounted tires may be kinda bulgy like the Michelin Man. I'm not a puller but not what you'd want for pulling, I think. |
A 7HP engine sits lower in the frame due to the overall size of the motor as compared to a 10. You can usually see half the bottom side of the fuel tank on the right side on a 70 below the hood when it is closed. On the left side the air cleaner on a 10HP (100) is also larger, which it is, in these photos. I would lean towards it being a 100. That being said, all bets are off if someone did an engine swap at one point with an engine that isn't prototype for said tractor.

If it ain’t one thing, it’s another.

I went to back the tractor out the other day, to replace the starter button. When I went to put it in neutral, the shifter snapped. I took it apart and went to my Grandad’s to weld her up. Got it back together and got the new button in.
Here are some pictures of the repair. I am having a problem where the starter is getting power, so it wants to start by itself. What is the square box with wires in front of the engine, in engine bay, between headlights? Thank you! |
That square box is the voltage regulator.
|
Thank you Rosehill.
|
FWIW:
If you don't have the wires connect properly to that "black box" it will do as you describe, also can let the "magic smoke" out! (That is not a good thing) :biggrin2: Make sure the wires are connected correctly to the labeled lugs/terminals on it.:bigthink: |

How about letting people do what they want, to the stuff they buy with their own money. This is insane that y’all can’t stop whining about a kid wanting to pull a sled with a tractor. Also, just for you, here is some updated pictures of the progress. |
Good lookin’ puller Redhorse!!! Nothing like seeing a Cub toting the front tires, I love it! Let them whiners whine LOL

I heard that, they can keep whining. |
Redhorse I let my youngest son drag our chicken tractor and then the old golf cart we have with our 125.
|
Mr RosehillfarmIHCC125,
I do agree that people should be free to do what they want with there own things, though. |

Question

I am still confused on which model engine we have. One thing I have noticed is the dipstick position. Can anybody confirm if they have the dipstick in the same spot as us and what model engine you have? The engine is on the driver side and is in the bump from the camshaft.
I ordered a carburetor for what engine I thought this was, and it was not the right carburetor. That is why I am still wondering. |
It's a Kohler K series engine, unfortunately you cannot determine the engine displacement from the dip stick location. It could be a k161 up to a k341. You maybe able to find that out by removing the front PTO and basket then finding a stamp on the block. I would suspect though it's a K241, 10 HP.
