Newbie Education 82 Series

What are the differences of the 982/984/986? Also differences of 782/784? Is there a brochure that explains/shows the differences? Thanks!!

Find a copy of this.
50 years of Cub Cadet
Takes you back to the beginning of the series when IH was still at the top of the heap and continues into the MTD/CCC era till 2011

982 - std
984 - above + rear pto + CAT 0 3 point - see my thread on this
986 - above + front hydraulics

CCC started using "ordering codes" early on that were stamped on the ID tag. The stickers/decals still said 982 for the most part.

Wow! Interesting way to differentiate options. Thanks!

I will put the 50 Years of CC on my Christmas Wish List.

784 had front hydraulic outlets and a lever to operate them separately along side of the deck/rear/front lift lever.
Its handy for a front blade and the ability to angle it. :beerchug:

These numbers only apply to CCC built machines. IH did't use this numbering system so there is no way to tell if an IH machine left the factory with what options.

Continuing research...anyone have a pdf TC-193 parts manual? I found pdfs of OM and SM.

Also, did the 982 have power steering standard or optional?

The 1912 was the next model, what was after the 1912? Was it the same chassis just different style?

Thanks!

I know get the CC 50 year book. Christmas is coming! :biggrin2:

In short....NO

The series after the 1912/1914 was the 2072.

farmer52 11-18-2022 10:35 AM

Thank you. Just trying to get the models straight.

farmer52 11-18-2022 12:49 PM

Now I am up to a 1572, 1772, 1872, and/or 2072! When will this madness end?!? :bash2:

There were a limited amount of 2072's (less than 100) with the Onan engine. Then once the supply of those ran out, then they switched to the Kohler Magnum 20.

Christmas came early! I received the 50 Years of Cub Cadet book today. I read the first two (2) chapters. Taking a break.

The Kohler being the preferred engine?

I own a JD 420 with P220G Onan. So far so good.

How difficult to find a 2072 or the Diesel versions 1572/1772? An 1872 would be okay too.

Some absolutely love the Onan. It has a sound all it's own. The bad part is the mega high cost and scarcity of Onan parts. I'm a Kohler man, so I would prefer a M20.

Other than the aforementioned Onan 2072, none of the Super Cubs are extremely rare. The next rarest would be the 1989 1772. All are desirable.

I think there was an option for power steering assist on the 982's IIRC. It is super rare and pretty primitive but I can't find any pics. Maybe Lew has an NOS one in his stash.:biggrin2:

Finished reading the 50 Years of Cub Cadet this afternoon. Interesting to say the least. I will say models got confusing once MTD/CCC started making the tractors. Based on the information, I want a Super Garden Tractor with power steering and either a Kohler gasser or Kub Diesel. Prefer a Diesel. Now to watch classifieds.

Thanks everyone for your patience and comments. It is appreciated by this old fart new to Cub Cadets. :biggrin2:

Is a 2284 basically the same as a 984, ,2072 and 2084? Just styling? Thanks!

1711Cub 11-20-2022 02:59 PM

The 2284 is one of the final Super Cubs made. It used the Kohler Command V twin. It has power steering, 5 gallon rear mounted tank, tilt wheel, and easily adjusted seat. They are great except for the fragile plastic front end.

Thanks! Front end - you mean the hood/grille?

1711Cub 11-20-2022 07:56 PM

The entire nose on those are plastic. The hood, side panels, and nose piece are all plastic, and fragile.
