Kohler K321 on Cub Cadet 1450 Surging

Kohler Engine K321 Cub Cadet 1450, was running great. Then over night when the engine started it didn't sound right, started Surging then stalls out. I had another new carburetor replaced it case the older one was dirty. Unfortunately, it did not improve the running of the engine. I have on order new Points, Condenser & Plug. Tested, the Coil Ohms which measure 3.7/3.8.

Is there any other item that I am missing that could cause this? I am thinking it is electrical...

Any Assistance is appreciated.

Sincerely, Bob

Fuel starvation. i.e. fuel line, fuel filter, crap in tank, clogged fuel cap vent

Times 2 on what Iron Man says. I would start with the fuel tank and clean
everything in the fuel system. Not only will you know it well when you are
done. Anything in the fuel system will no longer be part of the equation.
Really inexpensive project that yields great results. Good luck, let us know how
you make out.

Fuel Tank Good, with New hose and filter. As engine is surging very small particles of fuel can be seen spraying from the Carburetor, thats why I thought it is electrical. Ignition wires were also replaced, waiting for the parts to arrive see what results.

Thank You, Bob

I seriously doubt it. Look in the Fuel Arena.

Didja remove the filter from inside the tank? There is one on the shutoff. Plus the fuel hose should run downhill not up like it is in the picture. Your carb looks like a china carb, is the other one you took off the same?.

I'd start by losing that in-line filter.'
Is that something you just put on?
In addition to the one already in the tank it just makes for more un-needed restriction in the line.

If you have not done so already, another thing to try is tweak the carburetor. Richen the main jet and see if that works.

Yes, that is a Chinese, one I had that on hand. I have the Walbro that came off the engine & am cleaning it up.

I didn't know there is a filter in the tank. I will have to see if there are any issues with it. I removed all the fuel from the tank & replaced the hose with the in-line filter (not knowing about the internal one). That will all come off tomorrow, I will re-clean out that entire system, remove the shut off valve inspect it all & re-route the hose and see how it will run.

Thanks a lot I appreciate the comments & help.

I have a Troy Bilt pony with a intake that simply wont stay tight. Every time it comes loose, I get surging. Maybe check for sucking air between the carb and engine. I usually check that stuff by spraying carb cleaner in the suspect area to see it is changes the RPM.

I removed the gas tank & found that the Gas Tank Shut-off valve, was not working correctly. It didn't turn off the fuel as well as restricting the flow. The tank was pretty dirty inside, I took a shop rag cleaned the inside & removed the valve. There were so many sediments on the filter where only the very top of the screen let fuel flow. I also changed the points & condenser. I think the condenser is original one that came on the tractor because the black paint from the engine & on the clip was never separated and it is very corroded. I also cleaned the Vacuum Filter which was not restricting air flow, since I was on a roll I kept going.

I have a new fuel valve and filter on order when they are installed I'll see how it runs. These are all issues that needed to be addressed and I should have done so before, but the tractor was running Good & I'm of the mind set... "If it ain't broke" ....

Again all your replies have helped.

I hope you ordered a new bung for the valve/filter to slip into as well.

UPDATE: I re-installed the Fuel Tank & Original Walbro (after cleaning), Carburetor. Re-placed Fuel Valve/w filter & Hose, Points, Condenser and Plug. I believe it was a combination of issues, mostly the carburetor needed a good cleaning. The Fuel Tank Shut-off Valve was faulty and filter needed replacing. Perhaps, the Points, Condenser and Plug did not need replacing but it is good to know they are new and all gapped properly.

It's Running fine again.

Good to hear, a spic and span fuel system is always the best medicine
for a good running machine. Thanks for the update.
